Conversations with Lexi Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Smith.

Lexi Smith

Hi Lexi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I first started dabbling in photography during my first year as a yearbook staff member at Byrnes High School in 2017. Little did I know from there that I would turn it into so much more. In 2021, took my passions from yearbook even further. I decided to attend the University of South Carolina for a Visual Communications degree. This degree included all the things I loved, photography, videography, and graphic design.

When I first moved to Columbia, I had many worries, “Will I be able to keep up doing photography while in school?” “How will I even get clientele here? All my peers are in the Upstate..” “Am I making the right decision coming here?” I started out with some free shoots in the area, then partnered with my friend’s personal training gym for exposure… that same year during grad season, I booked over 25 graduates! I also had an opportunity to intern at a local welding school for a social media management position. I really couldn’t believe it, all I could do was thank God and know I had made the right decision.

I soon realized that if I could make money from doing things I loved, why not pursue it fully? February 2023, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my business LLC and open up a business bank account. Since day 1, I have been provided with many opportunities with my passion and I hope God continues to bless me in the years to come. Never did I think I would be where I’m at today as an entrepreneur!

Helping others has always been important to me. Through my photography business, I have the privilege of helping others capture their most cherished moments. But what many don’t realize is that, in return, they help me just as much—filling my life with purpose, creativity, and many connections.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, I have been blessed with many opportunities over time to get me where I am today. The hardest part of starting a business is overcoming the fear of starting, once you take the leap, you are halfway there. Turning passion into a business isn’t always easy, but every step along the way matters.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Photography- Main focus, Specialty, most known for, all areas of photography Videography- Dabble in some basic video work, branding, wedding video,
Media- Media management, social media work, short form content
Design- Logo design, social media ads

I believe that being able to offer multiple services is a plus for me, If I am not booked with photoshoots specifically, I still have other services I can also rely on to keep me busy. My media management is a consistent form of work/pay with business clients monthly.

What does success mean to you?
Everyone defines success in their own ways, to me success has nothing to do with money. Success can be defined as being rich in relationships, wealthy in wisdom, and prosperous in purpose. Falling and getting back up again, is one of the most successful things you will ever do on this earth, you cannot fully know success without knowing failure.
