Conversations with LaTasha Reaves

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTasha Reaves.

Hi LaTasha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started in the industry of music at a very young age. My mother put me in the choir as a child and as I grew so did my love for music in various capacities from playing instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, drums, and piano to singing in choir thorough elementary to college. I competed in the Allstars choir and got in but while in college, my mother passed, and I lost my drive to pursue my music. I also was in an all-girls group with my cousins where would perform at talent shows and more but after my mom passed and later my cousin was killed, and the group fell apart because I became a mother and took a different path. I stop writing music and focused on being a mother, a wife, college, served in the military and became a model, actress, and became self-published author. My life took a different turn. I never left music just focused on teaching my children to sing and working with the youth at church, being involved in my kids’ school and so much more. In 2020, I wrote a book and felt the calling to start writing music to accompany my book and I sought 2 of my friends Teedo Gonzalez and Rashid Oree. Rashid was so helpful in getting me connected with an engineer who helped me to record my 1st 3 songs in 2021. Teedo then helped me to fine-tune my craft with music structure and both were so encouraging along the process of recording and the final release of my 1st album entitled ” The Journey” and then the bonus Ep and then came my 1st holiday album and the rest is history in the making.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had a number of struggles along the way from dealing with the insecurities of being a teen to losing my mother before I graduated college and losing my own personal identity. I also felt like I lost my drive for creating music and singing in front of a crowd. My challenges in re-entering the field of music as a published artist are in finding my own style and creating something that people will enjoy. I have been told that I don’t have what it takes to be an artist. Now it’s a matter of continuing the momentum of the demands of the new millennium fans.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in neo-soul with spoken word mixed. I am known for creating a vibe with my music. It is smooth and cigar sounds and makes you feel the words of the music. I am proud to be doing music that is being requested and the excitement of my presentation while performing. I am new to the industry and am able to deliver a performance that people have stated they enjoy the vibe and its addictive once the performance is over.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
A lot of people do not know I know how to actually read sheet music and play various instruments. Alot also do not know that I have a wide range with my vocals and I do use the engineer to create my various vocal parts because I actually am able to sing different vocal ranges from tenor to 1st soprano. My favorite artist is Whitney Houston and love bBoyz II Men.
