Kimone Keane

Hi Kimone, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“Hello, I go by the name Kim Kelly MUA, and I’m thrilled to be here today. I am a passionate makeup artist with 10+ years of experience in the beauty industry. My journey began with a deep fascination for colors, textures, and the transformative power of makeup. In addition to such, I wanted to give my son a better life as a single mom living paycheck to paycheck. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills through formal training and hands-on experience, specializing in bridal and editorial makeup. I pride myself on my ability to understand my client’s unique features and preferences, creating looks that enhance their natural beauty and boost their confidence. I stay updated on the latest makeup trends, techniques, and products, constantly seeking inspiration from fashion shows, social media, and artistic endeavors. What truly sets me apart is my dedication to providing a personalized experience for each client, ensuring they feel comfortable and understood throughout the makeup process. In addition to my technical skills, communication and collaboration are key to a successful outcome. I love working closely with my clients, listening to their vision, and offering my expertise to bring it to life. Whether for a photo shoot, special event, or everyday glam, I thrive on the opportunity to create memorable and stunning looks that exceed expectations. Outside of work, I enjoy exploring new makeup techniques, experimenting with different styles, and attending industry events to enrich my knowledge and skills further. I am passionate about what I do and excited about possibly contributing my creativity and expertise to your team.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a makeup artist, my journey has been both rewarding and challenging. While I’ve experienced many moments of success and fulfillment, there have certainly been struggles that have shaped me personally and professionally. One of the main challenges I’ve faced is building a client base and establishing myself in a competitive industry. Starting, it wasn’t easy to stand out among the sea of talented artists and attract clients, especially since I am new to South Carolina and starting over from scratch. I had to put in a lot of effort to network, market myself effectively, and showcase my skills through portfolio building and social media presence. Another obstacle I encountered was navigating the freelance nature of the job. Freelancing offers flexibility and creative freedom, but it also comes with uncertainty and inconsistency in income. Balancing my schedule, managing finances, and finding a steady stream of clients required careful planning and perseverance. As with any creative profession, there were moments of self-doubt and criticism. Rejection and negative feedback can be disheartening, but I’ve learned to view them as opportunities for growth and improvement. Building resilience and confidence in my abilities has been an ongoing journey. Despite these challenges, I’ve remained resilient and passionate about my craft. Each obstacle has taught me valuable lessons and made me a stronger, more adaptable artist. I’ve learned to embrace the journey, celebrate small victories, and focus on my long-term goals. Ultimately, my challenges have only fueled my determination to succeed as a makeup artist.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a makeup artist, my work enhances natural beauty and empowers individuals to feel confident and beautiful in their skin. I specialize in bridal makeup and editorial makeup. My dedication to providing personalized and tailored experiences for each client sets me apart. I take the time to understand their unique features, preferences, and personalities, ensuring that the final look reflects their vision and exceeds their expectations. I’m known for my attention to detail, creativity, and ability to create versatile looks that range from soft and natural to bold and dramatic. Whether for a wedding, photoshoot, special event, or everyday glam, I strive to deliver flawless results that enhance and empower my clients’ beauty.

I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients over the years. Being entrusted to be a part of their special moments and helping them feel their best is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I’ve made a positive impact on their confidence and self-esteem is what fuels my passion for this profession. Additionally, I’m proud of my continuous growth and evolution as an artist. I’m committed to staying updated on the latest trends, techniques, and products in the beauty industry, constantly pushing myself to learn and expand my skill set. My commitment to excellence, personalized approach, and passion for my craft set me apart from others in the field. I am dedicated to providing exceptional service and creating memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression on my clients.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Absolutely! Finding a mentor and networking are crucial steps in advancing your career as a makeup artist. Here are some tips that have worked well for me:

  1. Attend Industry Events: Attend makeup trade shows, beauty conventions, workshops, and networking events where you can meet other professionals in the industry. These events provide valuable opportunities to connect with potential mentors, learn from experienced artists, and build relationships with peers.
  2. Utilize Social Media: Follow influential makeup artists, brands, and industry professionals on platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Engage with their content by commenting, sharing your work, and reaching out with thoughtful messages expressing your admiration or seeking advice. Social media can be a powerful tool for connecting with mentors and building your network.
  3. Join Professional Organizations: Joining professional makeup artist associations or groups can provide access to valuable resources, networking opportunities, and mentorship programs. These organizations often host events, workshops, and online forums where you can connect with other artists and industry leaders.
  4. Seek Out Educational Opportunities: Use makeup courses, workshops, and masterclasses from reputable makeup schools or industry professionals. Not only will you enhance your skills and knowledge, but you’ll also have the chance to network with instructors and fellow students who may serve as mentors or collaborators in the future.
  5. Reach Out Directly: Be bold and contact makeup artists whose work you admire to express your admiration and inquire about mentorship or guidance. Be respectful of their time and approach them with a clear and concise message outlining why you admire their work and how you believe their guidance could benefit your career.
  6. Offer Value: When networking or seeking mentorship, proactively offer value to the other person. This could be by assisting them with projects, sharing resources or insights, or offering trade skills or services. Demonstrating your willingness to contribute and learn can make you a more attractive mentee or connection.

Building relationships and finding the right mentor takes time and effort, so be patient and persistent in your networking efforts. Additionally, always be genuine, respectful, and professional in your interactions, as these qualities are key to fostering meaningful connections in the industry.
