Conversations with Jessica McMillan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica McMillan.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had an affinity towards art and sweets. From making masterpieces in my school art classes, crafting projects at home, and creating edible works of art to share with others! I guess you could say it started with my mom. Growing up she would make gingerbread houses for Christmas, a giant bunny face cake for Easter, and chocolate chip cookie lollipops for all sorts of special occasions. Once I was old enough to start making and decorating my own treats, I would spend hours creating and decorating. I loved every minute! Over the years my family has supported and encouraged my artfully sweet passion. I received a baking toolbox from one of my aunts, a very hard-to-find cookie cutter from the other, and my very first Kitchen Aid stand mixer from my grandmother who was also my number one taste tester! In college, I started to play around more with cookie decorating. Making Valentine cookie pops for my boyfriend and Easter cookies for my teammates. This creative outlet continued when I entered the workforce making cookies for coworkers, friends, and family that eventually turned into a sweet little business. I’m blessed with the opportunity to use my talents and help others create sweet memories. Today I am a wife, mom, and cookie artist who is all about spreading love and sugar!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like most things in life, there are always challenges. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but I think it’s what you learn from those mistakes that makes you better. I’ve learned about not meeting expectations with clients, building relationships, setting boundaries, and working out my strengths and weaknesses.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a cookier or cookie artist. I specialize in decorating sugar cookies that are enjoyed at all kinds of celebrations. I love taking people’s ideas and creating sweet works of art. My favorite thing about what I do is seeing the smiles my cookie creations put on people’s faces and hearing “These cookies are too pretty to eat!” I always reply don’t worry I took pictures for you!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Creativity is definitely the most important to my success. Finding new techniques to decorate cookies, improving my skills, and turning my ideas into reality.
