Conversations with Jennifer Downs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Downs. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Jennifer Downs

Jennifer Downs, E-RYT 200, RYT-500, YACEP, and co-founder of Lowcountry Power Yoga, discovered her calling to teach amidst a diverse academic background in world literature, religions, and creative writing. From a physical education requirement at The College of Charleston, her journey led to a 200-hour teacher training at Savannah Power Yoga in 2012, igniting a passion for transformation through yoga. She has studied and taught yoga nationwide, including in Georgia, Colorado, Hawaii, and now back home in South Carolina. As a Tier 2 Baptiste Educator, Jennifer continues to evolve today, with advanced certifications in yoga philosophy and education from Embodied Philosophy and Lit from Within Yoga. An Accessible Yoga Ambassador and meditation advocate, she champions accessibility and inquiry. Jennifer’s holistic approach extends to Yin Yoga certifications and ongoing studies in Trauma-Sensitive Yoga and Yoga Therapy, solidifying her commitment to yoga as a catalyst for healing and transformation through consistent practice at every stage of life.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has sometimes been a challenging road. I’ve spent considerable time questioning my purpose, exploring various career paths, and relocating around the country numerous times in search of belonging. However, I’m fortunate to have the unwavering support of my family, partner, and a nurturing community of teachers who embrace my inquisitive nature. Throughout the challenges and personal transitions, one constant has been the belief that yoga practice causes transformation and forges community bonds. I have seen that in my own life. Once yoga novices, my parents joined me in practice and have evolved into dedicated students, teachers, and now co-founders of Lowcountry Power Yoga. Though there have been setbacks, including dropping out of my first yoga teacher training, once becoming so disillusioned after failing to find a strong yoga community after a cross-country move that I gave up a regular practice, facing self-doubt and insecurity as a yoga teacher in a larger body, the evergreen wisdom of the Yoga Sutra guides me. I keep Yoga Sutra 1.14 at the back of my mind: “Practice becomes firmly established when it has been cultivated uninterruptedly and with devotion over a prolonged period.” Even when I feel pressed for time, I remind myself that yoga is a lifelong journey—a chance to embody the skills honed on the mat in every moment. My understanding of yoga as a lived philosophy continues to evolve, enriched by each practice, every literary exploration, and every meaningful interaction. I’m not perfect, but I’m committed to the practice.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I am deeply passionate about literature and the exploration of life through the lens of storytelling and writing. This self-study practice aligns with the principles of Jñāna Yoga, or “the path of knowledge.” In the studio, I aim to create a space where individuals can delve into the depths of their existence while forging meaningful connections with others. At our studio, we lead book groups as part of our commitment to encouraging self-study and introspection, providing a platform for individuals to engage in dialogue, share insights, and embark on collective journeys of growth and discovery. Integrating literature and community engagement sets me apart, offering a holistic personal development and empowerment approach. I am most proud of the transformative experiences and profound connections that arise from this intersection as we collectively navigate the intricate tapestry of human knowledge and strive for deeper understanding and connection. Looking ahead, I am excited to continue nurturing this dynamic blend of creative expression, community connection, and personal transformation within our studio and beyond as we embark on a journey of self-discovery and collective evolution. I look forward to publishing books inspired by my yoga journey, the amazing people who have inspired and supported me, and the wisdom that comes through practice.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The quality I hold most dear and believe has been crucial to my success is curiosity. It’s like a gentle flame, always urging me to learn, understand, and grow. Curiosity guides me to approach challenges with an open heart and a sense of wonder rather than fear or hesitation. It encourages me to explore new ideas, embrace the unknown, and see setbacks as opportunities for learning and discovery. In my work and relationships, curiosity is a bridge, connecting me with others and fostering understanding. It allows me to listen deeply, appreciate different perspectives, and build meaningful connections based on mutual respect and empathy. Above all, curiosity keeps me moving forward on my journey of self-discovery and personal fulfillment. It’s a gentle reminder to stay open to life’s endless possibilities, to embrace the joy of learning, and to approach each day with a sense of wonder and curiosity.
