Conversations with Jalen Hodges

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalen Hodges.

Hi Jalen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a multifaceted creative. I have always been drawn to the arts since childhood and wanted to try everything out creatively. In middle school, I joined the band, learned to play the clarinet, and was often the 1st chair at the state level throughout high school. I have always been drawn to cameras and have been running my photography business since I was 14. I am about to graduate from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Advertising and Media Arts. While here in Columbia, I got back into music by becoming a DJ and playing shows, clubs, and events throughout Columbia, making a name for myself. I have created a community where people can be themselves and be creative through the love of music.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a reasonably smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. I have often struggled with anxiety and depression that would almost eat me alive to where I would want to quit. Covid messed me up. I almost dropped out of college and moved home because I was on a creative block for a long time and did not create for a long time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Content Creator, DJ/Producer, and Filmmaker/Photographer. I specialize in creating ads for brands, photographing portraits, and live events, and working in the film industry. Most people know me in Columbia from my DJ alias JAYHO, where I have had the privilege to have a residency at Rooftop in Columbia, SC mixing house music almost every weekend for nearly 2 years. My ability to create events that help people find community through the shared love of music sets me apart from others. I consider myself different bc, as an artist, I dont want to keep myself tied down to one creative outlet and contain myself. I firmly push the importance of having safe spaces for all people, regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, etc.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check?
The War of Art by Steven Pressfield helped me figure out how to get out of creative blocks and get to a higher level of creative discipline.
