Conversations with Hunter Cardinal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Cardinal.

Hi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?

Thank you—I’m excited to be here!
I help midlife women stop overeating and gain control of their food so they can feel better in their clothes and enjoy life again. But that mission comes from a deeply personal place.

For years, I struggled with emotional eating, body image, and feeling like food was in charge of me. I was disciplined in so many areas of my life, but when it came to food, I couldn’t stick to the plan—and I blamed myself for a lack of willpower. I was stuck in a vicious cycle of dieting, losing some weight, falling off track, and gaining it all back (and more).

The game changer was when I learned to stop shaming myself and instead got curious about what was really going on underneath those emotional eating patterns. The weight didn’t come off overnight, and I had to put in the work—but over the last 35 years, I’ve lost and kept off over 45 pounds of body fat. For the last 9 of those years, I’ve been helping others do the same.

Believe it or not, I feel better in my 50s than I did in my 30s—and that’s exactly what I’m passionate about helping my clients achieve, too.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—especially when I was stuck on a rollercoaster of food cravings and weight fluctuations. There were times when I felt powerless to overcome the on-again, off-again cycle with food—being “good” for a while, then slipping back into old habits and feeling defeated.

Once I learned how to break the cycle, I was finally free to enjoy life again—without feeling out of control with food or worrying about buying another size of clothes.

What I’ve come to realize is that real change doesn’t come from mustering up more strength to get through another fad diet. Lasting change comes from being honest with where you are, opening yourself up to accountability and support, and being willing to dig into why you turn to food in the first place.

Starting my coaching business also brought challenges. I was scared to put myself out there and own my voice.

But when a client texted me this week to say, “I finally understand the difference between physical and emotional hunger—and I used one of your tools that very night to avoid a binge I know I would’ve had before,” my heart sings. I’m reminded why I do this.

Growth is rarely easy—but it’s always worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I work with women who don’t need another diet—they need a new approach.

Many of my clients already know what to eat. Their struggle is actually following through. That’s where I come in.

As a certified Emotional Eating Coach, I use my F.A.S.T. Framework to help clients shift their inner dialogue, create sustainable habits, and break free from food’s grip—for good.

Whether I’m working one-on-one or leading a group program, my goal is always the same: to empower women in their relationship with food, to provide them with support and accountability, and to show them that it is possible to feel in control again.

I’m a coach who will get in the trenches with you during the slip-ups and setbacks—because I’ve been there. As long as you don’t quit on yourself, I won’t either.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?

Helping women change how they feel about themselves is what lights me up.

I love seeing the shift when a client realizes that food isn’t her only tool to cope with stress or celebrate joy. When she starts speaking more kindly to herself, when her confidence grows, when she sends me a photo in a dress she hasn’t worn in years… that brings me so much happiness.

Outside of coaching, I’m happiest when I’m moving my body, spending time in nature, attending sports or music events, and—above all—connecting deeply with people I love.
