Today we’d like to introduce you to Charmicka Kelly.
Hi Charmicka, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I was fascinated with hair. I spent my childhood styling my doll’s hair, and as I got older, I started using family members as guinea pigs. I took cosmetology in high school and received my cosmetology license at 17. Soon after, I became a teenage mom, which added fuel to the fire! Since then, I’ve been thriving in the cosmetology business and loving it more every step of the way.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a journey! Going from a salon where I was paid hourly to a salon where I was paid commission, and now to being self-employed, is not for the weak. I’ve learned that to be successful in this industry, you have to show up in every way possible. There is no guaranteed paycheck every week. People need to see how we not only have to manage bills with the money we make. We also have business expenses we have to calculate as well.
As you know, we’re big fans of your work. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with it?
I am a licensed cosmetologist. I specialize in locs. I used to be known for doing excellent cuts, but ever since I’ve gotten into locs, that’s what I’m most known for now. I can still cut, but I can also do a mean retwist! Lol!! I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in this industry. I may not be the most famous stylist, but my brand, Charm’d by Micka, is definitely known and growing. For that, I honor God for giving me the strength and motivation never to give up. What sets me apart from others? I would say my ability to know that this gift was given to me by God and can be taken at any moment, so I always find joy in making someone feel better. I’m a giver, so being able to assist anyone in need always makes my heart smile. My clients also love my sense of humor. I’m always cutting up!
How do you define success?
Success is when you’ve grown mentally and realize it’s not about money or materialism. It’s when you’ve set goals and put your all into accomplishing them, whether big or small. It’s having peace of mind at the end of the day because you know you put in the work and got the results you desired. It could have been late-night studying, long hours working, or sacrificing to love doing what you do. I’m successful because I look at my children and see how I played a major part in positively influencing their lives. Because of that, I am blessed to have two great children walking in the right direction. To me, that alone is success!
