Conversations with Anita Burns

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Burns.

Anita Burns

Hi Anita, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in 2020 making hot chocolate bombs. The goal was to raise money for our homeschool curriculum. I realized quickly that I enjoyed making and decorating. After Christmas, I tried to make other items. I started with chocolate-covered treats like Oreos, marshmallows, pretzels, etc. I moved on to homemade rice krispies and even filled chocolates. Like the ones you get in the heart-shaped boxes on Valentine’s Day. Many customers and even strangers asked if I did cake pops. I had never eaten one, much less made one. I added cupcakes to my menu, but people still asked for cake pops. After several months, I decided to give it a try. It was a colossal disaster! I couldn’t even get them to stay on the stick! With several classes and many hours of practice, I finally got it to stay on the stick and look good. Now I’m known as “The Cake Pop Lady,” and my customers have said I have “The best cake pops in town.” Last year, I even won a baking competition for my Banana Pudding cake pops. I truly enjoy the decorating process of cake pops. I never thought I would enjoy being in the kitchen. I’ve always hated cooking! I enjoy decorating and making people happy; it’s a two-for-one deal! I’ve been truly blessed with the most amazing customers.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth. The first 10 months after the hot chocolate bomb craze, I felt like I was begging for orders. As I mentioned, I could not get the cake pops to stay in the stick! Finding out the legalities of being a cottage law baker was challenging, too. I spoke to 15 different people before I finally got the correct answer. I’m currently working on getting a camper up and running. To sell out of, not to bake in. Because it’s not a food truck and I’m a cottage law baker, no one seems to know what paperwork I need. It’s been a nightmare! I finally found the answer, so I’m hopeful!

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
While I have a full menu of delicious treats, cake pops are my best sellers. As I mentioned, my customers have named me “The Cake Pop Lady.” From simple with just sprinkles to shapes, I love getting creative with them. I love it when I take in an order that scares me. It pushes me to see how creative I can get. Honestly, I’ve shocked myself plenty of times. I was worried I’d never find my talent; I never would have guessed it would be cake pops. I’m most proud that my customers have more faith in me than myself. Many have sent me pictures of these intricate designs that I can’t do. They tell me they have confidence in me and still want me to do it. They push me to be better. Thankfully, they always come out fantastic, and they love them.

What matters most to you? Why?
The happiness of my customers means the absolute most to me, especially the kids. While all ages love cake pops, kids are the biggest cake pop lovers. I’ve done my job as long as they are happy with what they have. I want them to have the absolute best birthday ever!
