Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Barrow.
Hi Suzanne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Interior Designer, Suzie Barrow, is known for her ability to strike a balance between old and new, clean lines that feel comfortable yet sophisticated. After many years designing event spaces for blue chip brands like Ray-Ban, Hard Rock Café, and Sport’s Illustrated, she decided to translate her creative experience from experiential and event design to high-end residential interior design and started her firm – Barrow Interiors.
Barrow Interiors focuses on the holistic design of new residential home builds and remodels to furnishings design, fabrics, custom upholstery, curated art, and vintage finds. Our projects span up and down the east coast, from beach houses in Charleston and Wilmington to a ski chalet in Steamboat Springs. We partner with architects, builders, furniture craftsmen, and local artisans to create unique spaces and pieces that tell a story. Our work is inspired by travel and life experiences. With each project, we also study the local and cultural aesthetics reflected in each residence’s unique design. We strive to create a feeling, not just an aesthetic, especially when you walk through the front door! We have been known to obsess over the smallest of details. The details are what make the house even more special. With deep knowledge in construction, you can find Suzanne teaming up with her contractor husband, Byron, on a new custom home build project or just hanging at the beach or on a boat with their two children, Byron Jr. and Hattie, along with their Roan Springer Spaniel, Ranger.
Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Custom home building and interior design is a challenging profession to practice right now. We are constantly shifting to find ways to be more efficient in a very inefficient world with the supply chain issues that started from the pandemic. You have to work twice as hard on furnishings procurement and tracking with all the shipping delays these days, but at the end of the day, we love what we do, so it doesn’t feel like work.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a boutique interior design firm focusing on design builds and furnishings. We are known for obsessing over the small details, and the small details make the difference. The details wake us up at 4 am as we are constantly thinking of creative ways to execute an idea. We love people, and being able to design homes and special places for friends and family to enjoy a lifetime of memories is a gift. It is what it is all about.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some changes you expect to see over the next five to ten years?
In the south, especially in Charleston, we are designing houses that are more classic, timeless, and designed with a nod to local architecture and materials. We see more natural stone vs. synthetic materials like marble and soapstone for countertops. The open-concept floor plan is also less popular now. We love a formal dining room in the south to show off our adorned tablescapes, and heirloom place settings. This area allows you to be bold with a moody color or just a beautiful delicate floral wallpaper with painted trim that brings out the color in the wallpaper. You can also showcase family memories here, whether it’s an antique heirloom chest, your grandmother’s table, or a vintage buffet. It’s a great place to mix old with new. Lastly, we are seeing more of an eclectic design style of old and new and mixing different textures, patterns, and colors and curating a space of items collected over time vs. everything matching and buying furniture all at once.
