Community Highlights: Meet Shaun Corbett of Lucky Spot Barbershop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Corbett.

Hi Shaun, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a household of addiction and abuse, due to the situation at home I was on my own at 15. Being on my own led to being a parent at 17 and celebrating my 21st birthday in prison. I had to learn survival skills at a young age. The funny thing is, the things I learned while surviving on the streets are some of the same lessons I use when having to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These are the skills that have helped me to become a successful businessman today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
LOL smooth road, I don’t think the journey to success is supposed to be smooth! Along the way on your journey, you are supposed to go through all the ups and downs, the sleepless nights, and the financial worries. That’s the beauty of the process, the process makes you appreciate success because you can’t skip the process. Going through the process makes you respect it more because the success was given and wasn’t given.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Lucky Spot Barbershop?
I have been a licensed barber for almost 2 decades, I bought my 1st shop in my 4th year of being in the industry. Truthfully, I’ve been an owner longer than I was just a barber. Along that journey I have become a licensed instructor of barbering, owning 5 barbershops in Walmart stores between SC, NC, and GA. Lucky Spot Barbershop is the first African-American-owned and operated barbershop in Walmart stores internationally.

I have also fallen in love philanthropy in my life and personal journey. Giving back has become the backbone and culture of my brand and business. Our barbershops are diverse in atmosphere staff, and we are not your average barbershop. We are working hard to restore respect and ownership in the barbering industry. Our barbers are serious about their craft, their clients and we care about everyone in between.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m a definite believer in taking risk, and live by the mantra, “the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward!” I definitely believe that if you’re not taking risks you aren’t living. It’s literally the moral fabric of being an entrepreneur! My entire career, I’ve taken risks and I am still taking risks now. If you don’t try it, you will never know how the story ends.
