Hi Quinny, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Quinny Lai, I’m 25 years old and a licensed esthetician for about 5 years. I specialize in eyebrow shaping and design and specifically eyelash extensions. I’m the founder of McBee Lash Bar as well as it’s a master lash artist. I learned my skills in Boston, Massachusetts where I lived for years after arriving in America. After calling South Carolina my new home in January 2021, I opened up McBee Lash Bar in April of 2021 here in Downtown Greenville. What really confirmed my passion for this industry was seeing the happiness on my clients’ faces/ when they see themselves with a fresh set of brows and/or lashes. It makes my heart happy to be able to give them their newfound confidence.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As much as I want to say it’s been easy, like all good things, there were obstacles that challenged me to get to where I am today. Moving to the United States was the start of a new life not just for me, but for my family as well. I had to learn a new language, find a way to financially support myself, make new friends, and overall adjust to a culture that was so different from my own. It was scary. Not only that but I had to learn how to balance my life, work, and school all in my early 20s. Day in and day out it was school, followed by work, and then late night studying.
When I was able to open McBee Lash Bar, the obvious hardships of opening and owning a business were a given. What I didn’t anticipate was a worldwide pandemic. Everything was so up in the air. Mask mandates and regulations were constantly changed and I had to make sure I was up to code to ensure my client’s safety as well as my own. Building my clientele was difficult at first because eyelash extensions were and are still fairly new to SC. Not only that, but again, I’m only 25. It takes a lot to be a young business owner. I had to learn real quick that I needed to stand my ground and assert my place as the owner of Mcbee Lash Bar.
We’ve been impressed with McBee Lash Bar, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Here at McBee Lash Bar, we specialize in eyelash extensions and eyebrows. We want to help busy people to look and feel their best without having to spend so much time getting ready. Eyelash extensions are used to enhance the length, curliness, and thickness of natural eyelashes. One or multiple extensions are applied on one natural lash at a time with a special adhesive that will last anywhere from 4-6 weeks without damaging your lashes when applied and cared for properly.
To keep them always looking nice and full, clients usually come back after 2-3 weeks for a refill. There are many options that clients can choose from, such as a natural classic set to a very dramatic volume to achieve their desired look. Along with eyelash extensions, McBee Lash Bar also offers services like eyebrow waxes, brow henna or tint, and lash tint. Our client’s satisfaction is our main priority. Without our amazing clients’ trust and support, McBee Lash Bar wouldn’t be where we are today.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m not sure if it shows because I’m always so focused and busy, but I love what I do. I may seem stressed when handling the business aspects while lashing but I enjoy every moment of it. I worked so hard to be where I am. My advice to all the young soon-to-be business owners or entrepreneurs is to be patient, especially with yourself. Never give up because great things take time and lots of hard work. Before you invest yourself in learning a career, just make sure you will enjoy going to work every day doing what you love.
