Community Highlights: Meet Kristine Luke of Intend to Grow, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Luke.

Kristine Luke

Hi Kristine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found counseling the way most people do; I needed it! I was surprised and challenged that through the art of conversation and strategies, I could learn more about myself and take care of myself. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in South Carolina. I received a Master of Arts in Psychology: Clinical Counseling from The Citadel Graduate College in December 2021 and my Master of Arts in Public Health from the University of South Carolina in 2011. I have focused on public health through access and training to resources throughout my training. In my counseling training, I have focused on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and substance abuse treatment with individuals and groups. I founded my private practice, Intend to Grow, to support individuals in healing, growing, and building their wisdom.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, and most things worth experiencing are not. Aside from the paperwork behind licensure, you need to develop self-awareness to be an effective therapist. Often that comes with experience, curiosity, and facing reality. I have had to learn my limits, which is empowering because then I can excel where my strengths are.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Intend to Grow, LLC?
I founded my private counseling practice, Intend to Grow, LLC for adults to heal, grow, and build their own wisdom. I specialize in dialectical behavioral therapy, which teaches 4 skill sets, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. This specialization has come with certification from Behavioral Tech in foundational DBT training. I do not take this certification lightly because DBT may be used to treat suicidal and other self-destructive behaviors. When clients come to me in crisis, they feel like their lives are in hell, so through structure and skills, they get to build a life worth living. I don’t offer advice or a one-size-fits-all solution as a therapist because individuals can heal using their strengths and insight. My privilege is to be calm amidst the challenges of life. I am dedicated to working together with my clients.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
Absolutely! Success is not a solo sport; great influencers have challenged me, held me accountable, taught me, and offered me a shoulder to cry on. It is a long list; to be brief, I would hold up.

  • Kenya Dunn with Power Tribe Community has been a mentor during some of the pivotal moments in my career.
  • Dr. Jeannelle Perkins-Muhammed has always been an advocate for my personal and professional growth.
  • Kristi Galloway, my supervisor in DBT work. She has offered me opportunities to grow and develop my skill set.
