Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Vincent.
Hi Kimberly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As the youngest of five sisters, I always loved watching my sisters apply makeup, particularly how they slightly opened their mouths each time they apply mascara. I find that weird and funny lol. I began practicing how to apply mascara so I could have that feeling as well. As I grew older, I fell in love with the idea of makeup and making-up (the bold lipstick, eyeshadow, and contoured face) I was in for it. My Mom, Sisters, and friends would always let me practice on them; the good thing is, they all received lots of compliments. That was when I became interested in makeup artistry and discovered makeup as one of my happy places.
Although I wanted to do makeup just for the fun of it because I had completed my undergraduate degree in international law and diplomacy in Nigeria and then furthered my studies in the United Kingdom for a master’s in international relations. After I was done with my master’s degree program, while in the United Kingdom I started developing my skills through online tutorials, went ahead to take makeup classes online, I also did a master’s class at the London School of Makeup. While tutorials are a great starting point, there is no substitute for in-person training and experience, then I started putting all that I learned into practice by practicing with my friends, flatmates, and coursemates.
The idea of becoming a diplomat changed when I moved to the United States. My sister owns a beauty supply store and a hair salon. As a business owner, she advised while I wait on the department of states employment, I should turn my passion into my business and probably learn more about the beauty (makeup) industry in South Carolina. I was wowed by this advice because I know the greatest gift you can give yourself, is to find something you can naturally do and make a living out of it.
We created a space for my makeup studio in her beauty supply store, I began to practice with most of her clients, practicing on people with different skin colors, faces, eyes, and ages. I knew this would help me develop the skills I needed to work with a wide range of clients. When I was much more confident with my skills, I created an Instagram page for my business. Several persons started making inquiries via emails and DMs about weddings and other special events. I then got an opportunity to work as a makeup artist with National Physique Committee (NPC) bikini competition. That was how my business kicked off. Currently, I work with a makeup company as well. So far, my journey as a makeup artist has been good, I am looking forward to what the rest of 2022 brings and beyond.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a smooth and rough road if that makes sense, being a makeup artist can be rewarding as well as tasking. You get to be on your feet for several hours working, I guess nothing good comes easy. I have learnt that people will always make you second guess yourself. Just know that not all clients are for you, some will be difficult while others will be heaven-sent! Being a successful makeup artist highly depends on but not limited to networking, discipline, positive energies around clients and great pool of referrals to let people/clients start talking about how great you are. I always put in my best to leave a remarkable impression on all my clients. As an introvert, I try to avoid negative comments, sentiments and rumours as good reputation is a key to a successful business.
