Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailyn Brown.
Hi Kailyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2020, I came home from college due to COVID-19 and I was pregnant. No one knew that I was but I was scared and broke. I didn’t have a job and didn’t know what to do. I wanted my hair a certain way (soft Locs) but I didn’t know who could do that style in Charleston so I YouTubed it. I then went to the hair store to get what I needed and my mom helped braid my hair down. It took me all day the next day to do that style but it got done and everyone loved it. I posted it on Facebook but didn’t receive any potential clients until I did. An old classmate of mine from high school messaged me on Facebook asking questions about the style due to her having an appointment with someone else. I was sad at first but she finally asked if I was able to do her. I was so skeptical at first because I had never done anyone else’s hair except my own. So I did it and it was ….. terrible! Although she liked it, I did not but I posted it on social media anyways and I actually got okay feedback. I then slowly started to get more and more clients and before you knew it, I blew it. Although I am constantly evolving and growing, learning new things, I am still shocked that I am this far in my business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve had a lot of slow moments within my business when I got discouraged because I wasn’t booking as much or because it seemed that others were a little ahead of me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Loc Kreationz by Kay?
I am the hairstylist of my small business. I specialize in Soft Locs, Butterfly Locs, braids, etc. I am known for having great, consistent work and being fast but professional. That alone set my business apart from many other people who may be doing the same thing that I am doing. I am very proud to have such great supporters who always share or recommend others to my business. I am proud to have developed bonds with clients and become more outspoken. I am always offering affordable prices for my styles and I often do sales here and there that my clients can catch when booking.
What does success mean to you?
Success to me is when you are genuinely happy in what you do. You genuinely love it and have people that love your work. It’s not always about if you have the most money than others but If you are making money and never have to worry, then you have succeeded.
