Community Highlights: Meet Jen Rodriguez of Counsel Me

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Rodriguez.

Hi Jen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My undergraduate work was completed at the University of Maryland and I worked as a licensed social worker in Baltimore City. I served children and adults living with HIV and AIDS and worked closely with survivors of human trafficking. Through my graduate studies at Liberty University, I worked with victims of intimate partner violence and received licensure as a licensed professional counselor.

I have received extensive post-graduate training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Brainspotting. I have trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) and I am certified through the EMDR International Association. My passion for counseling comes from my own life experiences and my faith and friendship with God that has guided me to forgiveness, healing, and freedom.

I have been in private practice as a licensed clinician in Charleston, SC since 2017.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Having a private practice is like running any other business. I am solely responsible for marketing, administrative duties, and a fluctuating income. Careful attention to self-care is important so as to NOT experience burnout as a therapist. Something referred to as “imposter syndrome” is often a challenge in being a clinician. It feels unnatural taking on the role and responsibility of a therapist, especially in the beginning. That’s why we get so much training as therapists.

As you know, we’re big fans of Counsel Me, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Pain and difficulty are an inevitable part of life and sometimes we need a kind, supportive, and caring person to help us weather the storm, or find a way through it. I have extensive experience working with individuals who have encountered traumatic life events and who are struggling to manage stress, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, generational patterns of dysfunction, relationship difficulties, attachment issues, anger management, and emotional regulation issues.

I bring an engaging, down to earth and relaxed approach that will help to foster an honest and trusting therapeutic relationship that will ease any discomfort or fear. In our sessions, you will find hope and understanding that will empower you to heal and overcome. I am a Certified EMDR therapist and also provide Internal Family Systems therapy for trauma.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think taking risks is critical in experiencing the best that life has to offer. I took lots of risks in opening my practice. I started off with no clients, no connections, and little confidence that I had what it would take to actually help people. I am forever grateful that I did it and wouldn’t change a thing. I have a thriving practice now and get to come alongside people on their journeys to healing and wholeness.
