Community Highlights: Meet Deshawn S. Grant of Savory Salvations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deshawn S. Grant, II.

Hi Deshawn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been passionate about cooking. Growing up, I would see my mama cook for family and friends, and seeing how happy they were brought joy to my soul. I later went on to join the United States Army cooking in-country and overseas, furthermore pushing me towards selflessness.

It was then I knew I needed to do more. Taking off from the International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach, SC, I began to travel internationally to learn more about different cuisines. I also studied Italian cuisines in Orvieto, Italy at the Zeppelin Restaurante. Every time I am in the kitchen, I cook with love and passion so that your soul may be fed from within.

I have participated in Iron Caterer Throwdown V in the Upstate, Trio Dinner, Taste of Myrtle Beach, and Souper Supper! I am just an Afghan War Veteran trying to find my place in the civilian culinary world! In the midst of all my travels and studies, I have also managed to study food and wine pairings. I have incorporated some of my mother’s recipes into my Gullah/Geechee cuisines as that is my specialty!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been smooth and also not so smooth, so to speak. That is because having to deal with my PTSD and going through therapy takes time and makes things a little more difficult.

Also, having to go through a hardship kind of slows me down from meeting goals and doing certain tasks that I am falling short of attaining. Not having enough exposure also makes the road a little rough.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The purpose of Savory Salvations, Ltd. is to provide great knowledge, love, and southern hospitality to my guests and to my staff. We will be contributing to the kids of the community, veterans and giving second chances to people who have made mistakes throughout life but have been reintegrated back into society by way of education and volunteer work.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to do classes for at-risk kids teaching the basic foundations of cooking so that they will have a slight advantage when it comes to fending for themselves. I also have entered into Hell’s Kitchen competition for next season, so that I may gain the exposure and experience to give me the boost I need to excel in the culinary profession.
