Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Canipe.
Hi Chelsea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I spent almost a decade in the classroom as a teacher before stepping away 3 years ago to spend more time with my kids. In doing so, I could invest in multiple things I loved, including photography. I launched a page, registered for my business license, and it took off! It’s been a humbling experience, and I’m great-full to every family that has let me be a part of a special moment for them. I have learned so much in the past 2 years since launching and have so much to learn. I’m thankful to the photography community that has been so helpful. I worried (way too much) about invading an already saturated market of photography professionals, but I’ve learned there is truly enough business for all of us! Different styles, price points, and experience levels make enough clients for every talented professional! I get warm fuzzy feelings when I think about my client’s photos long outliving me in their homes, on their walls, & in the boxes in their closets. Thank you for trusting me with your family’s memories. I hope to continue capturing them for you!
Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you overcome?
Learning to run a small business has had its fair share of surprises! Hidden costs and requirements and The amount of time managerial tasks take surprised me. I spend just as much time booking, communicating, receipting, keeping up with paperwork, buying supplies, etc., as taking pictures.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
One of my biggest compliments this year was that my work was very inclusive, including people from all walks of life, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Wow! This hits the nail on the head, which I value greatly. I was talking with one of my favorite business owners recently, and we chatted about how only some brands are meant to be inclusive. When we create our brands, we consider our culture, shared values, and morals. Our products reflect a bedded purpose or desire. It’s a beautiful thing that allows us to celebrate everyone and their differences. I am so fortunate to be in a business that can be inclusive and does work that allows me to celebrate everyone and bring people together because it is important to me. My favorite saying I’ve used for all my adult life is that you can’t impact somebody professionally until you do so personally. I hope that philosophy is felt through my work and your connections with me. Anyone can have an expensive camera, but the person behind the lens is bringing out those candid moments, authentic smiles, and genuine feelings.
What do you think about luck?
The success of my business is mostly attributed to hard work, personal connections, and my emphasis on community relations. Good luck helps, but I rely on a strong worth ethic and positive attitude to lead the way!
