Check Out Will Manning’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Manning.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a longtime Photographer and Woodworker. I’ve actively worked in both disciplines for about 40 years. I held down a full-time job until I decided to retire and pursue my true passion. So far it’s been great meeting people and having a positive impact on their lives is very rewarding! I do most of my sales at craft shows but I do take special orders as well. I also sell items in local shops in Walhalla, SC and Westminster, SC. Sunni Ann Mercantile in Walhalla., Mountain Mocha, in Walhalla, and Dogwood Farm Apothecary and Gifts in Westminster.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Finding quality lumber at a fair price has been the most difficult hurdle I’ve had to jump.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With my photography I use a process called Focus Stacking, this is where you take many pictures of the same item and then run the pictures though the computer to make many pictures just one. This allows you to take 20 pictures of a waterfall and focus on different parts in each picture and the end product is incredibly detailed. I did the current cover of the “Visit Oconee Guide” for Oconee SC. They also gave me page 4. For my woodworking, I take rough hardwood lumber cut it up and put it back together into beautiful Cutting, Charcuterie, Bread and Shot Flight boards. I also make Bow Knives and other items.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe in hard work and if you work hard you find your own luck! I went into Sunni Ann and talked to the owner (Alisaun). She told me she would love to have my local prints but she wanted me to find someone to make rustic frames. I told her I was also a woodworker and could do that too. She has sold by far more of my wood boards than she has my pictures.

Pricing:

  •    Cutting boards from $70 to $150
  •    Charcuterie boards from $20 to $85
  •    Breadboards $30
  •    24”x36” print in rustic frame $250
