Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Bowen.
Hi Victoria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
My interest in the food scene was piqued when my family began to travel and learn more about the signature dishes and flavor profiles based on the cultural and environmental influences of the places we visited. Scouting out dining experiences quickly became my favorite activity when visiting a new city, so naturally, my interest grew in my town! Charleston has such a bustling food scene, with new dining experiences and concepts popping up left and right, and I love to stay in the know, as does my audience! The more people I connect with in the food and beverage world, the more I appreciate the stories and efforts behind operating a food truck, pop-up, restaurant, or store!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
What started as a fun outlet from my day job (I’m a mental health therapist) has now become what sometimes feels like a second job; the “hardest part” has been saying no! Every opportunity that comes my way brings excitement and new connections, so the only real struggle has been keeping an open calendar!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time mental health therapist for pregnant and postpartum women across the state of South Carolina. I am incredibly proud of the work that I do and know my niche is significantly underserved, even though 1 in 5 women suffer from a mental health or substance use disorder during this major life transition!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was spunky and enjoyed being in the center of attention. I was more creative than I was sporty. I grew up in a rural area, loved spending as much time outdoors as possible, and always loved animals. I was an incredibly picky eater growing up and declared myself vegetarian at 13 years of age after watching a PETA video on Thanksgiving. This lasted until I was 21, and since then, I have tried any food put in front of me. It sure is true that your palate changes!
