Check Out Megan Burgess’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Burgess.

Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It’s hard to know where to start!! Let’s just say college…this was a drastic time of self-discovery for me (as it usually is for everyone). I thought I wanted to pursue college athletics and become a physical therapist, but God instead directed my path towards nursing. Nursing school was rewarding and challenging all at the same time; it was the biggest relief to finally have my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in my hands by the end of it. I started my career in an Emergency Department and learned so much…mainly that I have a huge passion to care for people in times of physical need, because it almost ALWAYS opened a door for me to also care for their emotional and spiritual needs. Fast forward a few years and I transitioned into the Home Health field of nursing. I felt I made a great impact here because you get much more time with patients, and can have the same people for months on end. I developed very special relationships with people that I will never forget. Around this time my husband and I joyfully got pregnant, and as our baby’s due date got closer, I knew there was nothing more I wanted than to get every second I could with him. I had a beautiful natural home birth with a midwife in SC, and she offered me a job as a birth assistant that I was ecstatic about. Motherhood has opened my eyes to all sorts of beauty. I decided not to return to my job in Home health, and instead be with my new son and soak all the precious time up. I work week by week with my midwife and others located in the Upstate to help all kinds of mothers find strength and joy and beauty in their own experiences.

A few months after my son was born, and with me having more time on my hands, I really started to have this creative itch. I’ve always had an eye for design and I love to paint murals, but have always done it for fun in my own home or with friends. But with a lot of encouragement and support from those around me, I decided to take a big leap and start my business, Design by Meg! It is still very young, but the past few months have been so encouraging and full of beauty. And that’s my goal in it all; to help everyone find beauty. Whether it’s in their homes or in others, it’s always everywhere. I’ve taken on multiple projects just in a few short months and it has had amazing success, all glory to God! My weeks are filled with so much baby snuggles, joyous moments with new mothers and fathers, and creatively expressing myself on a wall, a canvas, or in a home. I am so grateful!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, this road has been fairly smooth. Everything has challenges of course and I have worked very hard to be where I am at, but at the same time God has opened door after door for me and I have just walked right through them.

Motherhood is a big self-reflector and a huge part of you dies when that first baby is born, so I would say the biggest challenge in it all for me has just been learning to let go. Of who I once was and who I think I’m supposed to be. You don’t have to have everything figured out to take a leap of faith, you don’t have to be a perfect mother for your child to love you unconditionally.

I think with my business, there was a lot of fear about putting myself out there, not knowing what in the world people would be willing to pay for services, and wondering if it would even be worth it. But God brought the exact people I needed to serve and learn with, and the more experience I get the more naturally it comes and the more joy and beauty I have from it!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Design by Meg is a local creative who loves to find beauty everywhere. I design whole spaces, paint beautiful murals, express myself with canvas art, and will sometimes flip a furniture piece or two haha. I love creating spaces that people feel at home in, because something huge I learned in my nursing career is that if someone doesn’t feel comfortable or at ease in their environment, they will NOT let their guard down to allow healing. So I’m huge about creating a cohesive space that people can relax in and honestly just never want to leave.

I would say my specialty is murals, they are just my all-time favorite!! They can create so much depth to a room without all the added clutter, and are the easiest way to transform a space. What sets me apart is that I will care for every aspect of a person during a project, and help them find their own beauty instead of just doing it for them.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I think risk taking is important if you want to fulfill any kind of dream! God directs my steps absolutely, but I also had to really step out and do an uncomfortable and scary thing for this all to be a reality!
