Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria LoVullo.
Hi Maria, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the summer of 2016, I moved to Charleston, SC with my mom from Charlotte, NC. I worked food and beverage downtown at Henry’s on market street. The following January I started my cosmetology journey. I went to Paul Mitchell the School of Charleston and graduated December 2017. Shorty after, I started working at Harlow Salon. I’ve been with Harlow for almost 5 years now. I am the salon manager and continue to be a stylist and take clients. I spent a lot of time working with clients and learning from my boss Kelli Smith owner of Harlow Salon. I must say I’ve learned so much about the beauty industry from experience with clients and being behind the chair. I’ve met some amazing people along the way to help me get me where I am today. I show up every day to make other people feel better and that is my goal, if I can make others happy that brings me joy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to get anywhere has some bumps and curves, that’s for sure. One of the biggest struggles I went through as all of us did was during Covid. Covid was a weird time for all of us in the beauty industry, not being able to connect with clients in a way I usually would. Staying away from people but still having to touch their hair was difficult. I wasn’t able to see clients’ faces or their reactions so it made it difficult to read people. I’d also say building a clientele in the beginning of my career. Building relationships and trust with clients takes time. It felt like a challenge trying to keep consistent people in the chair. I later learned along the way that people who really enjoy you and your creative mindset will stick with you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mainly focus on hair. I do everything from color, women and men’s cuts, blowouts, and styling. I also do airbrush make up where I can be creative with what type of look a client wants for their wedding, prom, event, etc. I would like to say I specialize in color across the board. I always have to remind my clients that good hair is a process. I’d like to say I’m known for transformations, let’s do something completely different. I am most proud of how much I’ve grown in the past few years. Not only as a stylist but as a person. What sets me apart from others is I truly care about the well-being of others. I want everyone in my chair to feel comfortable and leave more confident than they came in. I strive to make a positive impact on those around me.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The best characteristic I have put towards my success is positivity. Having a positive mindset has given me more opportunities because it has made me more open-minded.
