Check Out Kami Lynn Brown’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kami Lynn Brown.

Hi Kami, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been doing hair for 20 years. I started my career in Dallas TX and then made my way back to the east coast. Charleston has been my home since 2008.

I do consider myself an artist and really enjoy what I do.

The salon opened in 2020, I got the keys right before the pandemic hit.

It gave me space and time to breathe some life into this space. I am so grateful.

To be able to have a creative space of my own has truly been a dream of mine and with the help of my husband and family, I was able to make it happen.

I share the salon with a dear friend Lauren Bieri and together we work to create a quiet comfortable environment. A safe place for everyone.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not always been smooth. The biggest challenge for me was finding that when I show up for myself it is easier to show up for my clients. I moved from Dallas to Atlanta and then to Savannah, then Charleston. Starting over isn’t easy,

Also, my sister unexpectedly passed away 7 years ago and that changed me. We were very close and she was my only sibling. Grief has been the most difficult for me because it knocked me down full force.

My parents, husband, and close friends really helped me to remember to show up for myself. Therapy and redefining what my job looks like day today. This industry can be hard to sustain without proper self-care. Paying closer attention to this has been so helpful.

I am not about the hustle, if anything I like to be more intentional with what I fill my days with. I now require more time for myself and this helps me in so many ways. I love yoga and I have 3 dogs that bring me so much joy.

Honestly, life can be challenging, and continuing to create and evolve is my goal.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m not sure what sets me apart from others. Creating looks for people that work with their natural texture and haircuts that progress well is what I love. Also creating photoshoots with other creative people is fun. To document your work and see how it evolves.

A lived-in color is also my favorite. Honestly, I like to see my clients less often, because the looks I like to create are ones that change and become different with time.

I guess I’m known most for haircuts that last a long time.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Definitely to slow down. I really needed that break, not that the pandemic was a good thing, but it did allow me time to pause. It was peaceful to not have to do anything but just be most days.

I did spend a lot of time working on my salon with my husband. It seemed stressful at times but now I’m so grateful for this space of my own.
