Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalen Richardson.
Hi Kalen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It started when I was really young growing up in church and having a passion for drums my mom sang on a private group that would write songs and make music arrangements from scratch and growing up in that environment gave me the itch I began to scratch called songwriting through later years I would become a good drumset player and be In the marching band I realized I wanted to take music further when I met my friends out of the hip hop group KCMJ we started making music in 2017 gaining notice from highschool classmates and began taking it seriously I then locked in with a celebrity production camp and started working on my craft I moved out on my own and had a roommate taking constant trips to Atlanta doing shows networking showing my face dealing with the fact that I didn’t have any other plan this was my only plan to be successful because all I’ve ever done is wake up and make music so many people told me it didn’t make sense and that I should just give up but I knew something was out there and I knew it was for me
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
When I was 15 years old I was homeless for a while I slept outside my high school I had so many things going on mentally it was hard to focus in school so many classmates talked about me and laughed at me because I wore the same clothes sometimes and because I was wearing clothes that weren’t that expensive so I would try to make them look cool and be creative and I would get teased and talked about because I was “trying too hard “ I had a lot of band family take me in and help take care of me the best they could legally for as long as they could legally you can pretty much imagine how this translated when I started making music nobody really believed in me other than my close friends from my group KCMJ so many nights sleeping in my car running out of gas 5 dollar pizzas from little Cesar’s praying for a different outcome trying my best to make it through each school day without losing my sanity it was a rough difficult time but thank God I got through it
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My fanbase grew a lot around 2019 and at the beginning of 2020 I did my first sold-out show in New York a bunch of really talented young artists helped put the show on and I brought most of my group with me and worked with dead cassettes a punk band signed by Interscope they are extremely talented and I’m very lucky to play drums for them.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
God willing I see myself with a very core fanbase that cares about each other no bickering or hate in the comments just a fanbase that has love in their hearts for each other and myself and I will be putting scores into movies and Netflix original episodes creating soundtracks and being a voice actor for some cartoons I really really want to make sure that my group is solidified in the music industry and are creating generational wealth for their family’s I also want to be a household name artist and producer really want to make some anthems for some artist.
