Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Gaffney.
Hi Joshua, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started my business back in 2019. My wife and I wanted to start a business and after brainstorming and prayer we came up with photography. I then was able to research and look more into photography by utilizing Google, YouTube, and the local library. Rented many books in order to learn all there is to know about photography. I bought my very first camera (Nikon D3200) from a pawn shop in Inman. It was a great first camera and I was able to practice and really hone my craft as a photographer with this entry-level camera. I currently shoot with the Nikon D810 and have my own studio space that I moved into back in December of 2021. Looking back, I never could have imagined being where I am today but I truly thank God and my wife for helping and supporting me on this journey.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely had its ups and downs. When I first started, I was wanting to work as an apprentice under a seasoned photographer but I never was granted that opportunity. The biggest struggle for me was finding a way to gain consistent bookings but now I struggle with making sure to stay on task throughout the week to ensure that each client receives their photos back in a timely manner. Throughout the entire process, I can’t say that any of the struggles have made me want to quit, instead, they have pushed me to understand and see the importance of consistency and time management, and also helped me to understand that if nobody is willing to teach you that you have to put in the work to learn for yourself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer in Spartanburg SC. I specialize in family, couples, and headshots. I have had the opportunity to do 4 weddings to date and have 3 more weddings booked for this year. I am most proud of the growth that I have seen since I first picked up a camera back in 2019. I have a way better understanding of how light works and how to shape light to capture the most beautiful photos of individuals. What sets me apart from others is my determination, I might not understand a concept but I definitely will try it and if I’m not happy with the initial results I’ll definitely try it again until I get it right. I believe in doing everything with a spirit of excellence and not just settling for anything.
