Check Out Frederick D Reeves’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederick D. Reeves.

Hi Frederick, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Frederick D. Reeves, III, but my stage name is Son of Ice. There was an iconic rap group back in the ’80s and early ’90s called UTFO (Untouchable Force Organization) from Brooklyn, NY. This popular American 0ld-school hip hop group had a key member whose name was Doctor Ice. Well, Doctor Ice’s real name is Fred Reeves, and he is my father- making me the Son of Ice. So, that is how I came up with that name.

I am now a father of three boys myself. I am also a husband, singer, songwriter, dancer, motivational speaker, and producer. I take great pride in carrying on a love for music that was instilled in me at a young age and have even pursued a commercial rap artist career. However, my attention turned to inspiring youth when my son’s teacher suggested that I create a rap song for his school. That is how the Sound of Learning came into being.

I create customized songs that encourage learning for each school where I perform. My goal is to be a role model and inspiration to young audiences and utilize music to encourage them to study, strive to excel, and treat others respectfully.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road for me. I was not always on the straight and narrow and there were a lot of influences that tried to pull me in the wrong direction. As a teenager, I thought I knew it all and sometimes did not want to listen. However, I think what saved me from potentially going down the wrong path were mentors in my life who were tough on me, but had my best interests in mind.

Another obstacle I have had to overcome, especially early in my career is the negative stigma of hip-hop. I initially put a pause on me going into schools, and it is still a little hard as some schools do not really know me and what I do. Also, because schooling is so “traditional,” coming to schools and presenting learning through music is foreign to some educators who do not understand the total impact music has on kids.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As stated previously, I am a singer, songwriter, dancer, motivational speaker, and producer who goes by the stage name of Son of Ice. I am also the owner and founder of “The Sound of Learning.” I specialize in customizing songs for schools and writing and producing songs that emphasize learning. I am a big proponent of learning and encouraging students in unconventional ways through music and making learning fun.

I am most proud of the impact I make on students through what I do. My songs focus on respect, self-improvement, and learning. They have titles like Smart Talk, Better Me, and Student of the Year.

Any big plans?
I plan to continue with “The Sound of Learning.” I would love to be in every school in the state and venture out more to schools in other states.
