Check Out Cyndi Schick’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Schick.

Hi Cyndi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since 1991, there hasn’t been a break in my artistic exploration. It started with watercolor painting, then oil painting, then photography, and then back to oil painting! However, over the past 30 years though, I have dabbled and learned all about art history, sculpture, and even glass blowing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In general, my art “road” has been a smooth one. The biggest problem that I have had is getting exposure. I have grown my business mainly from word-of-mouth. My happy clients give my name to their friends and many of them have become repeat customers. Most small businesses are overshadowed by big box stores. We are out there, but probably not the first link that pops up in a web search.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an oil painter. Right now, I primarily create large beach and water-oil paintings on stretched canvas. My style is somewhat impressionistic and with a lot of texture. I have only painted one painting “en plein air”, meaning painting outdoors. All of my work is created in my art studio. My artwork is inspired by my photography. In the end, my bright-colored blue waves might be extremely different than a cell phone capture of a brown beach, but my real-life experiences are my inspiration for my work. When I walk on the beach, I study the movement of the waves lapping at the shore. I try to capture movement and emotion. The movement of the ocean, the smell of the salt, the happiness of a beach day. I am most proud of my relationships with my clients. For every working artist, there are 500 that aren’t selling their work. I consider every single sale an honor. It is the ultimate compliment for a person to love my work enough to hang it on their walls. The level of content that I feel never diminishes as the sales go on. I feel that what sets me apart from others is my ability to do custom projects with a truly consultative approach.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the internet playing more of a roll in selling products. The big companies have many advantages. People can get what they buy in a day. But most companies sell a commodity. I see art as the exact opposite. I don’t want to compete by the same standard. My sales process is very personal. My clients are purchasing an original work of art. There are no two pieces that are the same. There are paint drips on the back of the canvas in their perfectly, un-perfect, hand-made way. I, personally, created the work, in the good old USA with my hands. It’s a completely different shopping experience. When someone buys art from me, “one of a kind” is what they are buying.
