Rising Stars: Meet Zion Campbell of Columbia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zion Campbell.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My musical journey started at the age of three. I spent most of my time digging through pots and pans so I could beat the life out of them. I did that for a while until my parents decided to put me in drum lessons. That’s what initially opened the door to music for me. I played drums for about 6 or 7 years until I fell in love with guitar. I always had a deep love for guitar growing up, but once I finally picked it up, it was over. I dove into guitar headfirst. I spent all my time practicing, studying, and even writing. Once I got to high school, I began to get comfortable on the guitar. This led to me joining bands, playing gigs, recording songs, and meeting a lot of musicians some who are of my best friends to this day. It was a really crucial period in my development as a musician that brought me to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always. Life as a musician comes with its share of struggles. In my experience, the things that I’ve struggled with is self doubt. As a musician there are so many different pieces to the whole puzzle. You have to think about what you should be practicing, when are you going to get your next opportunity, and dealing with late nights and early mornings. All that put together will definitely have you question if you can handle all of this, but it is the ones who push through this that make it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musician through and through. I play guitar a lot around town and that is what I’m mostly known for, but I also produce and write music as an artist. I spend a lot of time learning and listening to music taking ideas that inspire me and put them into my own music. I feel like that is something that truly sets me apart from others. I am a student of music and I will always be. It does not matter how far I go in my career. I will always work to learn more.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was already heavily in to music. I didn’t really go outside, I wasn’t into sports, and I didn’t really have a huge group of friends. Don’t get it twisted though. I loved it like this. It allowed me to have so much time on my hands to learn more about music and push me further ahead then were I would’ve been if I was living the life of an average kid. People always are surprised when I tell them this, but I truly have known what I wanted to do with my life since I was literally 5 years old, so as I child spent my time preparing for what I believe is my destiny.
