Rising Stars: Meet Victoria Armstrong of Charleston, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Armstrong

Hi Victoria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Victoria, the owner of Victorious Photography and co-creator of Salty Sailor Presets for photographers. Based in Charleston, SC, I specialize in portraits, fine art, maternity, and boudoir photography.

During my junior year of college, I fell in love with photography and wanted a creative hobby. I started with my first Sony camera, taking pictures of water droplets and ice cubes splashing into water. As I got more into it, I began photographing my friends around Charleston.

After graduating with a degree in special education, I became a high school teacher and was asked to take photos at football games. That’s when I knew—photography was what I really wanted to do. So, I named my business, got my licenses, and jumped right in.

My first paid job? Craigslist—yes, I KNOW! It was for a couple who had secretly gotten married. We spent the day at a fun park, with them dressed in a gown and suit, riding all the rides while I captured it all. It was an unforgettable start to my journey.

I’ve been running my photography business since 2011. Now, I also teach photographers worldwide through retreats, mentorships, and online courses. I own a worldwide popular photography preset company too!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an artist, many people admire what you do and assume it comes effortlessly. Social media often paints a picture of perfection—endless clients, easy money, and a flawless life. But that’s just an illusion.

Early on, I had local friends eager for me to host photography shootouts and retreats so they could learn my methods. I built connections in the industry and trusted those around me. But when my sister and I launched our preset company, everything changed. Instead of support, I faced betrayal. Photographers in my own community—people I once called friends—turned against me. They spread cruel rumors, tried to sabotage my business, and even attacked me personally. We were flooded with hate—nasty comments, messages telling us to quit, even emails telling us to end our lives. All because we were succeeding at something they wished they had done first.

It was a painful lesson, but a necessary one: not everyone wants to see you win. I had to learn to set boundaries, protect my energy, and stay focused on my own path. Be kind, but be careful. Some people will resent you simply for existing, and success can be lonely. But staying true to yourself and your vision is always worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a portrait photographer, I believe in providing more than just beautiful images—I create a full experience. From perfectly styling and coordinating your outfits to helping with every detail (yes, even down to the socks!), my goal is to make sure you look and feel your absolute best.

More than anything, I want you to feel empowered. Whether it’s a family session or a boudoir shoot, I keep things fun and lighthearted, making sure you’re comfortable every step of the way. Photography should never feel like a chore. We all have things we’re self-conscious about, but I love showing you just how incredible you truly are.

My style? Crisp, detailed, and vibrant. I love enhancing the boldness in every image, making each moment stand out.

Beyond photography, my amazing sister and I built a global business helping photographers perfect their editing through Salty Sailor Presets. I also mentor other photographers, traveling across the country to teach incredible women the art of photography—using breathtaking landscapes from oceans to mountains to deserts as our canvas.

Photography, for me, is about more than just pictures on a wall—it’s about connection. I grow alongside my clients, capturing their milestones and memories for years to come. This is more than a session; it’s a story, and I’d love to help you tell yours.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Every day is a risk. Every session is a risk. Taking risks is what I do.

I push myself to think outside the box, using both my creativity and hard work to stand out and be the best. My business has been built on bold choices—from trying new techniques to constantly learning and evolving. Growth doesn’t happen by playing it safe. If you never take the leap, you’ll never know what you’re truly capable of.

One of the biggest risks I took—later in my business—was getting a studio space. It was a leap of faith, but it completely transformed my business. Having a dedicated space allowed me to expand my creativity, offer more session types, and shoot indoors year-round. It opened my eyes to new possibilities, pushed me to grow, and helped me stand out in ways I never expected. Taking that risk was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Another huge risk was launching our preset company. My sister and I took the bull by the horns and ran with it—and it took off fast. We became super successful in a short time because we believed in our vision and went all in. The truth is, if you don’t just go for it, someone else will. Taking risks is what sets you apart.
