Rising Stars: Meet Simone Simmons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Simmons.

Hi Simone, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The start of Charleston Charm Paper Flowers started from a simple request. I’ve always been happy creating things for my family and friends. When my best friend’s wedding was approaching, her sister inquired about a backdrop using paper flowers. I was struck by the intricate designs and fell in love with the possibilities. From that event, I booked several others and thus the company took off. My background consists of a Bachelor’s in Studio Art, and a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. Both dear to my heart, the pandemic shifted the priority of roles and the flower business became a full-time pursuit. The pandemic brought about many changes, one of which small intimate parties were preferred over larger gatherings. CCPF was very fortunate to still have the opportunity to create intimate backdrops for smaller events. I now create for a wide array of events, including; weddings, showers, business events, and home décor.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles of maintaining a business during the pandemic was evident for everyone in the food, service, and entertainment industries. I experienced a tremendous dip in requests, however as time went on, small events became the norm. I was able to safely set up, leave, and allow the cautious engagements to continue.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My 1st degree was a bachelor’s in studio art. My master’s degree is in Marriage and Family Therapy. For 9 years I specialized in family therapy with teens and their families. I was always known for creative ideas and options to engage my clients. I believe that most of that is attributed to my willingness to try new and fun things. The older I get the more I appreciate all I’ve learned and am still learning. As it relates to being a wife, mother, artist and therapist, it’s hard to narrow down just one thing I’m “most proud of”.

I am most proud of the God in me that shined so bright, that my husband Rodney “found his good thing” and chose to spend his life with me. I am most proud of the 3 beautiful souls we ushered into this world; Brayden, Grayson, and Olivia. I am most proud of the gift God gave me to create beautiful things, that people cherish their special moments with. I am most proud of the lives I’ve been able to impact during therapy, as they have undoubtedly impacted mine.

When I look at what sets me apart from others, I think of my all-hand-cut flowers. I enjoy the subtle changes that the curvature of flowers possess. Not everyone creates the paper flowers ALL by hand. Many use a Cricut machine.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
It’s evident to everyone around me. Family means the most to me. Making the flowers has allowed me to spend quality time at home with our youngest. On the weekends when we have events, it’s a family affair. The kids help unload and set up. I enjoy making my flowers for other families.
