Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherrill Hill.
Hi Sherrill, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey with a college internship at a stained glass shop, where I learned through hands-on experience, creating church windows and learning to see glass as a form of painting. I’ve always loved working with my hands and creating pieces that bring joy to others.
Every artist is unique, and with my work, I truly put my soul into each piece. Whether it’s a painting or glass art, I want it to speak to the person who experiences it. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to grow, sell my work, and continue evolving as an artist.
Today, I work full-time as an artist and feel incredibly blessed. I draw a lot of inspiration from the textures and colors found in nature. What started as a passion has grown into a workshop, a showroom, and an annual 25-vendor art show hosted in my own yard, something that has truly been a dream come true.
Through my Art and The Artist Next Door Show, I love creating a space where art and community come together. Today, as Greenville continues to grow, I partner with decorators and builders to design custom pieces tailored to each client’s vision.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Early in my journey, I had to focus more on raising my family. For a long time, it felt like I was falling behind or missing opportunities, especially as I watched other artists continue to grow and develop their work. It was easy to compare myself and feel discouraged.
But over time, I realized that my path didn’t have to look like anyone else’s. When I returned to my art, I brought with me a new perspective, life experience, and a deeper appreciation for the work. I leaned into hands-on learning, stayed open to feedback, and focused on growing at my own pace.
Another obstacle is that, early in my career, I didn’t have access to the online videos and resources that are available today so I learned on my own. As technology has evolved, I’ve had to adapt my pricing strategies and the way I reach collectors. I now use social media, my website, and other marketing channels that have become essential in an ever-changing digital landscape. Along the way, I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help when I’m unfamiliar with new tools or technologies. Being willing to learn from others and seek guidance has been an important part of growing my business and successfully selling my work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist and my mediums are stained glass, painting, and mixed media.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Growing at my own pace and embracing my unique journey has shaped not only the way I create, but also the mindset I bring to my work every day. If I could offer one piece of advice to emerging artists, it would be this: be generous with your knowledge, stay open to feedback, and always remain true to yourself.
Try not to compare yourself to others in a way that leaves you feeling discouraged. Instead, let their work inspire you, challenge you, and teach you. Every artist sees the world through a unique lens, and that individuality is what makes art so meaningful.
Looking back, I’m deeply grateful for the journey and all that it has taught me. Your work will continue to evolve through time, practice, and a willingness to keep learning. Trust the process, stay curious, and keep creating. As long as you continue to grow and remain authentic to your vision, you’ll become the artist you’re meant to be.
