Rising Stars: Meet Noni Langford of MUSC Main Campus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noni Langford.

Hi Noni, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Here’s my bio:
Noni Langford serves as the Special Projects Coordinator and Pocket Urban Farm Manager at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). In this role, she designs and implements campus improvement projects, focusing on making gardens more accessible for people with disabilities through thoughtful landscape and hardscape modifications.
As the Farm Educator for MUSC’s Pocket Urban Farm program, Noni educates students, staff, and community members on the vital connection between healthy eating and overall wellness while highlighting the therapeutic benefits of engaging with nature. A member of the American Horticultural Therapy Association, she delivers over 20 hours of therapeutic horticulture programming weekly, serving diverse populations, including young adults with disabilities, inpatient seniors, and patients in adult, adolescent, and addiction units at the MUSC Institute of Psychiatry.
Noni contributes to campus sustainability as a member of the MUSC Arboretum Board of Directors, monitoring tree health throughout the campus. She recently secured grant funding to establish a food forest at the Institute of Psychiatry. Her educational contributions include campus-wide tours highlighting horticulture, the MUSC Arboretum, and sustainability initiatives. She also teaches the College of Medicine Humanities elective, which explores campus horticulture, horticultural therapy, and food insecurity solutions.
With academic credentials including a degree in Horticulture, a certificate in Horticultural Therapy (with a pending Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner designation), and a certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from MUSC, Noni brings extensive expertise to her work. In addition to her university responsibilities, she operates a residential design company, creating construction documents for coastal homes.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been great. Full support from leadership and supervisors. Challenge: not enough hours in the day!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m lucky to have the wonderful opportunity to do my “Day Job” at MUSC and I’m really proud that I design homes for my clients. I’ve been doing that work since at least 2000. It is an interesting and busy balance. I design about 12 new homes per year and about 6 renovations to existing homes.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Having the tools and ability to make a difference for home design and esp. for my work at MUSC.
