Rising Stars: Meet Mij Bolyard of Newberry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mij Bolyard.

Hi Mij, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After working as a gold and silversmith in the 1970s and ’80s, life took a turn that led me down a different path. As a newly single mother, I joined America West Airlines to ensure my boys had medical insurance and the ability to visit their dad—benefits that meant everything to our family at the time.

Fast forward to four years ago: my husband Michael and I bought half of the historic Armfields building with a dream of creating a space where local artisans could showcase and sell their work. I now spend my days doing what I love—making pottery, soaps, candles, and a variety of crafts. After 38 years in the airline industry, retirement has given me the gift of dedicating myself full-time to this passion.

I’m beyond grateful for this chapter of life. I’m surrounded by amazing vendors, kind customers, and a warm community. I have a wonderful husband, two incredible sons—Miah and Donavon—and their families. Life feels full, creative, and exactly where it’s meant to be

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The renovation of our building was truly a labor of love. My son—God love him—took on the majority of the work, and he did an incredible job. My husband and I, along with a few wonderful friends, pitched in where we could. The process was long, challenging, and costly—it took nearly seven months before we could finally open our doors.

But what a journey it’s been! We’ve come such a long way since those early days, and we know the best is yet to come. Now that I’m able to be at the shop full-time, my mind is brimming with new ideas for displays and renovations. My creativity feels boundless, and I’m excited to bring fresh, inspiring changes to the space.

Last year was tough on the economy, but we remain optimistic—especially with the introduction of our new classes, which have been a fantastic addition. We’re hopeful about the future of Newberry. It’s a beautiful town with so much potential, but unfortunately, not all businesses are able to open full-time.

After the misfortune of Hurricane Helene, we saw an opportunity for the community to come together and revitalize Newberry. More events, more open doors, and more energy downtown can make a world of difference. It’s always disheartening to see tourists disappointed when only a few shops are open, especially during peak times like the incredible events at the Opera House. These moments are golden opportunities for businesses to stay open a little later and showcase the charm and talent within our town.

We’re excited about the future and grateful for the support of this community. Together, we can help Newberry grow, thrive, and shine.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
From the rugged beauty of Gunnison, Colorado to the warm heart of the South, my creative journey has always been guided by passion, perseverance, and the unwavering support of my family. I received a scholarship to Kansas State University to study Gold and Silversmithing and Art, and though life led me through other career paths—including a fulfilling chapter in the aviation industry to provide for my two sons—my love for the arts never left center stage.

After a divorce, I worked for Goldmaster’s in Mesa, Arizona, honing my craft in fine metals before life required a practical pivot. But creativity has a way of resurfacing. Years later, with a humble $125 pottery wheel squeezed into our kitchen in California, I rekindled my love for ceramics. Eventually, we moved into a home with a backyard studio, where that spark truly caught fire.

To my complete surprise, my sons entered me into an art festival in Illinois. I was stunned to receive a congratulatory letter from the committee—selected to participate based on photos they had secretly submitted. We sold out on the very first day of the three-day festival! The joy on my face, my husband Michael says, was unforgettable. My sister-in-law Patty, our powerhouse marketer, played a huge part in that success.

While I dream of returning to lost-wax casting and metalsmithing one day, for now I pour my creativity into clay. I’m proud of my journey and the pieces I create—each one with heart, heritage, and a bit of sass. After all, I believe in adding a little “Sass to the South.”

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Skiing, fishing and spending time with my family in the mountains. Family is the most important thing.
