Hi Lakeisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My business partner, Franshetta Carr, and I have traveled extensively in the U.S. and around the world. We often do food tours in each city to get a taste of the local cuisine. On a trip in 2023 Franshetta said we should do this in our hometown to highlight locally owned small businesses around downtown Augusta, well three months later I set up our website and had our business license in hand! Here we are today offering a Brunch and Happy Hour walking food tours most weekends around downtown Augusta. Our main goal is to highlight delicious food prepared right here in Augusta by our locally owned small businesses.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. In the beginning local restaurants were hesitant to partner with us. We would set up meetings with owners to explain the purpose of our company, how our tours worked and the benefits of having us in their restaurants, but it was difficult to win many restaurants over. We instead took the approach of just showing up and letting them see what we were doing. That was a great tactic because we have now trained restaurants on how it works and what to expect when we visit. We are using what we learned to expand to another city, North Augusta, SC.
Another challenge we came across was other businesses were trying to steal our same exact vision and business plan, by visiting the same restaurants and vendors we posted on social media as advertisement for our business.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are The Foodie Trot, a locally owned and operated walking food tour company in Augusta, Ga. You might be asking yourself, “What is The Foodie Trot?” A trot is a walking food tour of 4 local downtown restaurants that aim to introduce you to a variety of food selections to include hidden gems, local specialties and lots of fresh local ingredients. We offer a brunch trot, a lunch trot and a happy hour trot. Food is included in the price on all tours. Come out and explore Downtown Augusta’s growing food scene with us!
