Rising Stars: Meet Kyra Thompson of Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Thompson

Hi Kyra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi! My name is Kyra Thompson and I graduated from the College of Charleston Honors College last May 2023. I studied Exercise Science and have always had a passion for health and wellness.

My life did a little 180 when I decided I wanted to explore Marketing shortly before I graduated. I took up an internship with Scenic Route Marketing, a social media marketing and creative production start-up. Through this I discovered my deep love for videography, which led me to start my own business called Wildflower Films. I began doing video for everything from weddings to brands and loved getting to express my creative side. Although I loved this new path and all of the new experiences it had brought me, part of me was still missing the world of health and wellness.

I decided to further my education by becoming a certified personal trainer, 200 hour certified yoga teacher, and began working at a gym called Defining Moment Fitness. There I learned from incredible mentors not only about health and wellness, but also what it takes to run a business.

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, so I knew I had come to a point where I needed to create something I could be proud of. My love for holistic wellness drove me to put more time and energy into my health page called “Kyra Marie Health”. I began posting mindset tips and tricks, recipes, workout ideas, and inspirational quotes.

I have watched my page help others and myself, by giving me an outlet to express my own life experiences. The next step on my journey is to open a nonprofit that creates a space for every individual to have access to holistic wellness practices. I am excited to watch my passion blossom and help as many people as possible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has by no means been an easy road. I have always been aware that starting your own business or taking a “less-conventional” career path isn’t easy.

The biggest thing I have had to wrestle with over these past couple years is the beast we all know: imposter syndrome. It is so easy to let self-doubt creep in and tear down your confidence. Almost everyone I have talked to experiences this on a daily basis.

Although I definitely still battle with this, I know that if my “why” remains clear and true nothing can stop me from achieving everything I want. When your “why” comes from a place of genuine love and a want to help others I believe success always follows.

In addition to this, constantly changing my mind on which career path I wanted to follow was a prominent stressor for me. I have come to learn that we don’t have to put ourselves in categories or boxes. We really can do anything and everything we want to do, it just takes discipline and patience.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As you can tell from my previous answers, I do MANY different things. I have my own professional videography company called Wildflower Films, in which I do everything from weddings to branding to lifestyle.

I also have a health and wellness page on Instagram: @kyramarie_health in which I post mindset tips and tricks, recipes, workout ideas, and inspirational quotes/affirmations.

I am in the process of starting a nonprofit that raises awareness for increasing accessibility to holistic forms of health and wellness in communities.

I am the most proud of the work I have done that has helped or inspired other people. Human connection means everything to me, so anytime I get to connect with or help others I truly light up.

I believe that something that sets me apart from others is my ability to show compassion for every individual I encounter. This is something I believe our world needs more of and I love connecting with others who value this as much as I do.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
The saying “it takes a village” could not be more true in my experience. I am constantly overwhelmed by the support and community I have in Charleston, SC and beyond. My first shout out goes to both of my parents. They both raised me to believe that I can achieve anything with hard work and a kind heart.

In addition to this my mentors such as Paul Brown (the owner of Life in Rewind Films), Kelsey McCormick (the owner of Scenic Route Marketing), Tim Church and Ashley Reese (the owners of Defining Moment Fitness), Ean Cuenca (the owner of Cuenca Creative), Dr. Tiffany Jackson (owner of EcoHealth and Wellness), Luke Shirley (the founder of Quest in Recovery), and so many others.

Each of my mentors have played a part in teaching me new skills, offering me advice on my work and life in general, and cheering me on as I continue this journey. I could not be more grateful for their support and encouragement.
