Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Brown
Krystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first started modeling as a child. I remember doing only a handful (if that) of local fashion shows and boutique showcases. Even though those opportunities rarely happened for me then, something felt right.
After graduating high school and attending college (College of Charleston), I planned to pursue modeling but hesitated. As I continued through my days as being carefree and joyful, I was struggling with a mental war. My confidence was pretty low, college was kicking my butt, and I could barely sustain the energy to stay awake long enough to truly dedicate myself to modeling. It was like I put my dreams on hold to create “security” that wasn’t truly there. My heart wasn’t there for what I was trying to pursue and I knew that couldn’t be my forever. Especially when I started working in the field I was attending school for. I was miserable. I knew I was a Creative and I couldn’t let that die.
Once I released myself from my inhibitions and allowed God to guide my path, everything changed for the better. I moved from Charleston, SC to Charlotte, NC, rebuilt my confidence, and finally began to take my modeling seriously. Going into adult modeling, I self-taught my walk and makeup, learned to discipline my diet, also prepare to face rejections. Another major component was networking and knowing your worth. I now have multiple magazine publishings, traveled to multiple states and recently to Canada to walk fashion shows, and editorial work with more projects in the works. I could not have done any of this without God, my family, friends, and models/model coaches that I have met over the years. I owe it to myself and them to continue to build on my skills and grow.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Modeling has been a realization journey. As wonderful as my role is, there are moments where you have to face challenges and recognize things about yourself you didn’t before. One thing I realized was it was initially hard for me to accept rejection. I had to learn not to take them personally and sometimes rejection was protection. Just continue to take time outside to work on my craft
Another was discernment. I have met some amazing people and some not-so-amazing people. I thought I was able to perceive people pretty well, but this industry taught me a few things that I lacked awareness. Thankfully, I have not been in a situation where my life was in danger, but some of the horror stories you hear and read are heartbreaking because you know that they’re true.
Outside of the growing pains, I have had an amazing time collaborating with photographers, working with productions and other models, and also having the chance to talk with brands, designers, and magazine editors like the ones for Voyager.
I also love knowing that I am making that little small-town girl with the glasses and gap’s dreams come true. I hope that my journey will help other girls and women who can relate to me open their horizons beyond what’s just in front of them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a multifaceted model. I am a traveling model who specializes in editorial, commercial, runway, and print. I continue to practice and work hard to make sure that I will be successful in multiple styles of modeling versus one or two areas.
I love the creative process just as much as I love the finished product. As a creative, I am open to other areas like acting and music in the future. However, modeling is my home. No lingerie or boudoir.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First, I thank God in all that I do. Without him, there’s no me.
Next, I would like to thank my family, especially my mother, Delores, and grandmother, Ruth, who have seen all the behind-the-scenes work. The late nights, the meetings, etc etc etc. Next are my best friends who all are now my sisters. They have encouraged me through it all while being transparent with me. Also, my wonderful, amazing boyfriend that has seen the good, bad, and crazy, yet still supports me fully.
Every production that has allowed me to work with them. Especially The Golden Runway Tour which has allowed me to flourish in multiple ways, including my first international fashion show, and every person on the team is also my chosen family. Thank you to my manager, model coaches, and any person who has spoken life and prosperity over me. Even the smallest mention has meant the world to me because it reminds me that I do not look like what I’ve been through.
