Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Smith Smart
Hi Kelly Smith, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a mainly self-taught Artist specializing in Gemstone diffuser bracelets, Fantasy, Moon-themed and gemstone earrings and necklaces, Fantasy Art prints, hand-painted wooden boxes, etc. Creating is one of my outlets in life that keeps me sane and makes me feel fully alive. I get lost in my own little world when I take out my beads or my paints. I am constantly seeking adventures and experiences to be newly inspired by. I strive to learn new techniques and improve upon my existing knowledge to keep my work fresh and innovative. The endless possibilities for uniqueness and personal touches ensure that jewelry creating and art will always remain exciting and magical for me. When people wear my jewelry and view my art, I want them to feel as though they have a tiny treasure with them that evokes thoughts of their favorite place or a special memory. I want them to feel as though they carry with them a creation sparked from passion and magic that has the power to turn an ordinary day into an enchanting one. Step off the beaten path and discover the treasures that await you…
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although being an Artist has always been my dream and what I strive for; it has not always been an easy road. What they say about being a “Starving Artist” is sometimes true in my case. I am lucky that I have a supportive partner with a regular job since being an Artist does not always bring a regular paycheck.
Additionally, I sometimes struggle with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Are my creations good enough? Should I be farther along my path than I am? Why am I not bringing in more money? 2024 was a really difficult and lean year for me as far as Vendor Events, Paint Classes, and sales in general. When I feel discouraged: I remind myself that I do Art for my own sanity and happiness. If other people love what I create; that’s just an added bonus.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As with many Artists; I tend to dabble in many things. Currently, I am really enjoying holding Paint Classes! I enjoy getting a great group of people together, sharing tips and techniques and ensuring everyone has a fun experience and learns something new.
I really enjoy mixed media and I am dipping my toes back into Pet Portraits which I haven’t done in awhile. I like to use a combination of acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils and ink. I find portraits to be so much more challenging than drawing just any animal. I like to bring out the individual personality of the subject I am portraying.
I continue to love jewelry creation as well. Finding new and unique gemstones to work with appeals to my nerdy side and creating Intentional jewelry specifically for an individual’s needs or wants is something that really appeals to my compassionate side.
I am always drawn to and inspired to learn new things; it’s a challenge to reign myself in and focus on just a few things!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
One thing I learned from Covid-19 is to roll with the punches. When people couldn’t go into work at the office and needed to avoid each other in public; selling Art became way more challenging! My online presence became more important than ever and I learned to try to have different platforms and ways to connect with people. I am still trying to learn/teach myself new ways to stay connected with my audience.
Additionally I became more diligent with my health and in striving to maintain a good immune system.
