Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Wilson.
Hi Elijah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Seneca, South Carolina, I discovered my passion for visual art at a young age. What began as sketching horses and dirt bikes on my parents’ living room floor soon became a vital creative outlet, a source of personal healing, and a way to connect with others.
My artistic journey took a definitive turn at age 13 when a local beauty salon owner commissioned me to paint a mural. That opportunity built my confidence and led to a commission from my middle school for three additional murals. Independent study of masters like Salvador Dali, Charles White, and M.C. Escher, along with mentorship from my art teacher, Robert Spencer, further shaped my technique and voice.
While largely self-taught, my formal foundation includes:
– Four years in high school gifted and talented art classes under Frederick Edgerton.
– A full summer scholarship to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts at Furman University, studying under former Furman University art director Michael Brodeur and world-renowned batik painter Dr. Leo Twiggs.
– Design coursework at Lander University in 1995.
Through persistent trial and error, I eventually embraced acrylics for their fast drying time, versatility, and compatibility with mixed-media techniques.
As an adult artist, my work has focused primarily on custom commissions. This practice has continually pushed me to innovate and explore new mediums. Highlights of my career include creating custom artwork for celebrity golf benefits to support community causes, painting residential murals, and presenting my first international exhibit at the Monat Gallery in Madrid, Spain. Over the last four years, I have been currently creating new series of works for upcoming opportunities in the near future. I conducted my first art therapy classes for Seniors at a Senior Retirement Community a few years ago. All of this has led to one of my few exhibits that will take place late November 2026 titled,
Collection Of Persistence
Six works, One continuing journey
Tracing a creative life from a first mural commission at thirteen to a new chapter of expression today.
Art remains the conduit through which I express my vision. My goal is to continue creating work that inspires, uplifts, and offers humanity a fresh perspective on life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My life obstacles have helped shape me long the way. Early on coming out highschool the resources were not available for me attend art school even though my portfolio was accepted at different art institutions. I had to self support and rely on student loans take the design courses during college and I never experienced gleaning from an art instructor my short time in college.
In my young adult years as I entered into the workforce, I experienced that my style of artwork was not accepted geographically where I was residing during my years in my twenties. That challenged me to find creative ways to get my work in front of possible collectors outside of my area. By having a full time job most of my life, my ability to network with other creative individuals and art organizations was limited to help build a following. Most of my life, like a great deal of creatives I have had to wear a lot of hats to keep my dream going. I delt with the challenge of not having a public studio that would give me public visibility.
I experienced even through divorce, bankruptcy, car repossession and other life events that this has only given more of an appreciation for what I have to give to others.
I learned that having the time to form relationships with possible collectors that can invest in your artwork requires some time spent with them. Selling a piece of artwork follows these relationships.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As I stated earlier, I have been a commission artist most of my life. Over the last four to five years I started creating series of works to get the attention of galleries and interior designers.
My medium of choice is acrylic. I am known for the ability to capture the essence of what the client desires in their custom painting. I am a storyteller through subjects being conveyed as symbols and how those same subjects are presented to the viewer. If I am creating a commission work for a client from a suggested image, I try to infuse a bit of myself into the project visually while giving the client what they want at the same time.
I am known for using bright colors as they are a contrast to darker colors to give the image depth and layers.
In regards to my series of works and personal one off paintings; they primarily are storying telling and symbolic from start to finish. I enjoy merging subjects such as: brass instruments, a collective of flowers, jazz subjects, butterflies and the anatomy to express my voice.
I believe that my imagery is created with a non mainstream appeal with a relativeness that can speak to any human being; this is what makes me unique.
I am proud of the fact that I was not influenced by an art instructor and was able to form my own identity.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think the value of the visual arts will increase in value and necessity. Ai is a great asset to humanity, however I believe because imagery created by Ai will be so similar over the years, people will long for creations that are created from the spirit of a human.
I believe that the visual arts will be used more for therapy for all ages on a regular basis for all ages. The idea that cutting funding for the arts throughout our educational system is happening is a sign that there will be a void to be filled on a large scale by way of the arts.
I believe due to technology and being able to understand other cultures through technology, more international collaborations will take place. Technology has open a real time window for people to understand unique creative individuals around the world.
With all that has been expressed, I want to be in position to take advantage of fresh eyes and curious minds globally. I just acquired an international art collaborator who is pushing my artwork internationally through his twenty year client base as a former international gallery owner. I have always thought that this would be an asset for me because of my subject matter and the open perspective that it should get. This could also bring in more opportunities.
