Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Beth Scott.
Hi Dr. Beth, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have just recently retired from clinical PT work after 38 years, and am moving into seeing private female clients to support their health in movement, nutrition and overall wellbeing during peri/menopause. I have multiple professional certifications on which I can rely–Medical Therapeutic Yoga, Feldenkrais(R), Bones For Life(tm)…, so I have the ability to customize movement to keep it safe and appropriate, regardless of their current fitness level. I hold 2 nutrition certifications (one from Cornell) to guide their nutritional health. I love cooking and am a food nerd, so guiding women in this arena feels natural.
I am also a first level sommelier, so Women, Wellness, and Wine is my thing!!! I do concierge wine tastings with food pairings and they are a lot of fun! Balance is important in life, so why not enjoy a little wine?
My husband and I have a small cottage, The Well Being Cottage, which we use for small business and family events. I am the Director of the cottage and coordinate and plan events there. We have hosted local business events, wine events, family events and wellness events. It also serves as an Airbnb. We love meeting all the new people this business brings!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been struggles!
The biggest was when, and how, to shift away from clinical work without feeling like the bottom would drop out!
I have started a total of 5 practices in my career (3 of my own) and building a practice (or a business) is not for sissies!
Going from a steady income to “whatever you can get” is a real challenge and requires a new mindset and planning.
I have benefitted from the support of coaches (near and far) and networking through membership in Summerville Women in Business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my PT career, I specialized in chronic pain and the use of more holistic interventions. My practice had a heavy emphasis on spine because much of chronic pain is related to the spine. As a result of my focus on chronic pain, I needed to study trauma because most chronic pain does not exist outside of individuals who have experienced trauma. Chronic pain is more common among women than men.
My emphasis now is on women–especially peri/menopausal due to the difficulties encountered during this transition–including pain and metabolic issues, sleep disturbances, and more. My own peri-menopause was complicated by Lyme disease, so I had to do a lot of research and seek providers who were thinking outside box. This gave me a unique perspective and plenty of knowledge to apply for women who might seek my services to guide them to feeling better and optimizing their satisfaction with their health.
Any big plans?
Entering retirement while running small businesses is a unique challenge.
My husband and I hope to travel, but his business is Flowertown Daylily Garden, so we have to be in town during certain parts of the year to tend the garden.
That said, I look forward to continuing to organize events for The Well Being Cottage, planning wine events and creating a private clientele who are interested in the long term shift to better health.
I will be teaching some classes on nutrition basics, YOSY (Your Orthopedically Safe Yoga), and Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (R) at Collective Wellness of Summerville to create opportunities for people to access my content and approach.
