Today we’d like to introduce you to Camm Wess.
Hi Camm, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
You could say my story began in the church. It was the first place I performed in front of anyone other than my parents. The positive reactions from my congregation gave me the confidence I needed to keep going. Knowing what was in my heart, I decided to dedicate myself to music. Along with performing in church, I also sang in school choirs, from elementary school all the way through college. Learning to sing different styles and genres of music from a young age gave me a great musical foundation. With my passion and love for my craft, I always knew I was an artist. So, in 2015, I stepped out as “CammWess” for the first time and began working toward building my platform. I focused mainly on growing my following through social media. This gained me supporters, and fans, and eventually began getting me opportunities. Through my consistent posting, I received invitations to perform on huge stages like Whiskey Jam in Nashville and the Essence Festival in New Orleans. NBC’s The Voice even reached out to me through my social media. I feel genuine love from my fanbase and we, as a group, get better looking every year! I’ve truly been blessed with an amazing path in life and a support system that helps me stay on that path.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has been blessed, but it has definitely not been without its lessons. I have learned some difficult lessons along the way. The biggest advice I could give to any artist would be to realize that the music business is actually a lot more business than it is music. The marketing and business side of things is not something artists are typically keen on. But to make it in this field, you have to be just as good with the business side of things as you are with your artistry. Having two supportive parents in my life shielded me from a lot as a young artist. But I have learned that there is always more to learn. If you want to be an artist, get educated about the industry and then surround yourself with people that love you and want you to win.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a music artist, a singer/songwriter rooted and Soul, Gospel, and RnB. When it comes to what I am most proud of, that would definitely be my ability to learn and grow while staying true to myself. This is also what I think sets me apart as an artist. A lot of my success comes from my ability to adapt while learning in real-time. My run on The Voice is a perfect example of that. I had to think creatively as I carefully put together each arrangement I did on the show. No matter what song or genre I was singing, it was important to me that you heard my soul. The same thing is true about my latest single “Tired”. “Tired” can be found everywhere you listen to music. The song is a journey through the trials of love lost, the Official Music Video on my YouTube channel tells the full story!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For anyone just starting out in the music industry, or really on any journey you are passionate about, I would say this above all else: changing your perception of your weaknesses is a necessary step on the way to becoming the best possible version of yourself. When you identify your strengths and weaknesses, use your weaknesses as inspiration to fully immerse yourself in the areas you are not as strong in. Focus on how to change those weaknesses into strengths instead of limiting yourself to only the things you are naturally gifted in. If you are extremely creative and artistic but lack the business and marketing skills to get where you want to go, do something about it. And while you focus on evolving those weak points, continue to hone in on your strengths and explore your natural talent. This shift in perception will allow you to both challenges and celebrate yourself on the journey to reaching your full potential.
