Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Alexandria Fussell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started baking when I was just four years old with an Easy-Bake Oven. My mom went on a whole hunt to find for me that Christmas. She always said I made the best little cakes, and honestly, I never stopped. Baking has been a part of me ever since.
Fast forward to 15 years ago, I made a cake for Easter for my family, and nobody believed I made it because of the piping details. That moment stuck with me. Shortly after, my mom encouraged me to make my son’s first birthday cake. I didn’t trust myself to do it, and I didn’t think it turned out that great, but everyone else loved it. From that moment on, people started trusting me to make their cakes, and that’s how my business began.
Now, almost 15 years later, I’ve been baking professionally, and it all started from simply trying, not knowing what I was doing, and people having faith in me before I even had it in myself. That experience taught me just how powerful faith can be, and how far it can carry you.
Today, I’m the proud owner of Cake Bar by Alexis, located at 1670 Old Towne Road in Charleston. We’re celebrating seven years in business this April 1st, and every day I’m reminded how far this journey has taken me—from a little Easy-Bake Oven to building something I’m truly proud of.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Now, I’ll be honest, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Right before our first year anniversary, COVID hit, and it threw the biggest wrench into everything I had planned. But I had to learn that it’s not always about your plan, it’s about God’s plan. That first year was amazing, business was booming, everything felt right. Then everything shifted. The second year slowed down, the economy slowed down, and it wasn’t just me, it was everyone trying to figure things out.
Going through that season showed me how strong I really am. It showed me that I’m truly meant for entrepreneurship and that nothing is impossible if you keep going. You just have to pivot, stay creative, and not give up. That was one of the hardest seasons I’ve faced, and it lasted over a year. But with the support of my community, my family, and my friends, we made it through.
Even now, there are still little obstacles and hiccups along the way, but nothing we can’t handle. I’ve learned that storms will come, but we’ve survived every single one. And no matter what, you just have to keep pressing forward.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom cakes, Charleston chewies, cupcakes, and an array of desserts that not only look beautiful but taste just as good. I’m known for my detailed fondant work, creativity, and my ability to bring my clients’ visions to life, even when they’re not exactly sure what they want. Every cake I create is made with intention, love, and a personal touch.
What I’m most proud of is the journey it took to get here. I started baking as a child and turned something I loved during maternity leave into a business that has now been operating for over 15 years, with a thriving brick-and-mortar storefront for the past seven. Through everyday challenges and the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, I’ve stayed consistent, kept my faith strong, and continued to grow. Being able to support my family, serve my community, and build something from the ground up is something I will always be proud of.
What sets me apart is not just my beautiful work, but my larger-than-life personality and my resilience. Cake Bar is an experience—from amazing customer service to feel-good conversations. I didn’t start out knowing everything. I’m self-taught, and I learned as I went, trusting the process along with a little help from Google and YouTube University. I pour myself into everything I create, and my customers can feel that. I’m not just selling cakes, I’m creating experiences and memories for people’s most important moments. Cake Bar By Alexis also offers one on one decorating classes as well as Birthday Parties and Corporate events.
How do you think about luck?
I truly believe in manifestation. I believe you are what you take in, so for me it starts with how I’m feeling. I try to stay rooted in positive, happy thoughts because what you pour into yourself is what you pour out into the world. And what you put out into the atmosphere has a way of coming back to you.
I don’t think it’s just about luck. I think it’s about being a good person with a genuine heart. When you move with good intentions, the good will always outweigh the bad. There have been times where something may not have been exactly what a customer envisioned aesthetically, but because we’ve built real relationships and trust, they’re still happy and understanding.
That’s why I stand on the belief that what you give is what you get back. Every day in business isn’t perfect, but even the tough days can still hold something good if you choose to see it that way.
