Today we’d like to introduce you to Torry Seward
Hi Torry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I knew at a very young age I wanted to work in media. What I didn’t know, was the wild ride and tough times it would take to make my dream come true. My goal was always to become a TV news anchor, I started working with a local TV station in Savannah, GA as a senior in high school. My role was strictly behind the scenes but I was promised with hard work (and a college degree) I could climb my way to an anchor position. After graduating from Georgia Southern University, I started working that same station again. After a year of freelance news packages & hard work, I was only left with broken promises. I realized my goals were never going to come true there, so I walked away. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made, Being an anchor was only thing I ever wanted but something in my soul knew it wasn’t mean to be. I stumbled into my first position in radio by divine intervention. I was there to apply for a secretary position (I figured anything in media was better than nothing). While there, I ran into one of the biggest names in Savannah radio who decided to take a chance on me. The rest is history, I started working weekends and through a few moves (Savannah to Charleston, SC, and now Greenville, SC) I’ve landed a dream job with the Hawk and Tom Show. Working with living legends – Hawk, Tom, & Kato – has been such a joy. I’m lucky to have a supportive family & husband who have cheered me on and supported the sacrifices it has taken to get me where I am. The one thing I’ve learned in life, is to not fight the inevitable. You’re going to land exactly where you’re meant to be, so let go and have faith in yourself & God to know – that even though times will get tough – it will work out.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
You are going to fail sometimes. But life isn’t about your failures, it’s how you handle them. Know that failed moments do not make you a failure. It’s a learning experience, learning how to trust your gut & pull yourself out of the fire.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While I love being in radio, the platform to help others is by far my favorite part of the job. In 2018, after talking with a listener at a concert and hearing her story, I was compelled to help. She was new to the area and thanked us (the radio station I worked for at the time) for hosting a free concert. She explained after years of dealing with abuse from her spouse, she packed her kids in the middle of the night and fled. At the time, they were living with a family member but only had what they could pack in a suitcase. She left most of their belongings behind. After researching and finding out South Carolina annually ranks top ten in the nation for domestic abuse, I created In The Clutch. In The Clutch is an annual donation drive helping to fill supply shelves at local women’s shelters. The best part is it allows the community to get involved by donating their own gently used handbags filled with personal care items. Seeing the desire to help each other inspires me year after year.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I have completely fallen down the rabbit hole of thriller novels. Verity made me cry & want to throw the book across the room (highly recommend). The Reformatory made my jaw drop & stay up way past my bed time to finish. But I promise I’m okay because I’ve also read Swamp Story and that book made me laugh out loud.
