Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Boatwright Johnson.
Hi Tim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Both of my parents are entrepreneurs, so I was exposed to it at a young age. My first taste in entrepreneurship came in 3rd grade as I was selling pencils and candy to my classmates. As high school and college came, I knew I was purposed to help people but didn’t know how’d I get compensated for it. After analyzing all of my interests, I leaned heavily on my love for financial literacy. I was getting great feedback from my classmates on my presentations and decided my business would be speaking with an emphasis on financial literacy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not. As an entrepreneur, you’re told it’s challenging, but not many individuals could explain the challenge. Some of the struggles have been: discipline, time management, effective marketing, content ideas, learning how to protect myself at all times, and rediscovering myself. Once you’re full-time in entrepreneurship, your strengths and weaknesses show up every single day. In order to overcome those struggles, you must be self-aware and open to learning how to overcome those difficulties.
We’ve been impressed with Develop With Tim, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Develop with Tim offers speaking services and books. I am a transformational speaker with my primary topics consisting of financial literacy, entrepreneurship, overcoming adversity, mindset, purpose, and goal setting. My ultimate focus is the youth, but I consistently inspire humanity of all ages, genders, and ethnicities.
When speaking to the youth, I am set apart from others due to connection and relatability. I come from a low-income household, I’m close in age, an African American male, and I took a traditional route in life by attending and graduating college prior to starting my business. A lot of organizations bring in speakers with great messages but no connection which would be a forgotten moment in the future. I am a walking testimony that they don’t have to be an outlier to do what I do.
I am most proud of being able to motivate and encourage individuals. The world is full of negativity and I have the ability to be a positive light in the lives of those I come across.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned life is short and it’s difficult to prepare for everything. Also, only focus on controlling what I can control, and when things out of my control come my way, respond swiftly to the best of my ability.
