Hi Thomas, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Meritorious, LLC began from my passion for cooking, creativity, and bringing people together through food. What started as preparing meals for family, friends, and small gatherings gradually grew as more people began requesting my food for their own events. I realized that I could turn something I genuinely enjoyed into a business that created memorable experiences for others.
I officially established Meritorious, LLC in 2022 and began building my catering business one event at a time. Since then, I have prepared and catered food for everything from intimate gatherings and brunches to weddings, baby showers, celebrations, and larger events serving more than 100 guests. My business serves Rock Hill, Charlotte, Columbia, and surrounding areas, and I continue to expand my reach.
Like any entrepreneur, my journey has required perseverance, growth, and the willingness to keep evolving. Every experience has helped shape my vision for Meritorious and strengthened my determination to build a brand that reflects quality, creativity, and genuine hospitality.
Today, I am focused on taking Meritorious to the next level, expanding my clientele, building new partnerships, creating new opportunities, and continuing to provide quality food and service. My goal has always been bigger than simply preparing a plate of food—I want every event I serve to feel special and memorable. That is what Meritorious represents: “Turning Ordinary Gatherings Into Extraordinary Occasions.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, the road hasn’t always been smooth. One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to balance the creative side of what I love with everything that comes with running a business. Catering requires much more than preparing great food—it takes planning, organization, consistency, time management, customer service, and the ability to adapt when things don’t go exactly as planned.
There have also been times when life required me to slow down and step away from the business, but those moments gave me an opportunity to reflect, refocus, and come back with an even clearer vision for Meritorious. I’ve learned that growth doesn’t always happen in a straight line. Sometimes you have to adjust, learn, and keep moving forward.
Every challenge has taught me something and helped me become more intentional about the business I’m building. Instead of allowing obstacles to define my journey, I’ve used them as motivation to continue growing Meritorious into a brand known for great food, creativity, professionalism, and memorable experiences.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
When I started Meritorious, one thing I knew from the beginning was that I wanted to be different. I didn’t want to simply do what everyone else in my area was already doing. I wanted my work to stand out—from the food and presentation to the overall experience I create for my clients and their guests.
I specialize in catering and creating flavorful, comforting dishes while putting my own creative touch on the menu and presentation. I enjoy taking familiar foods people already love and finding ways to make them feel fresh, elevated, and memorable. Whether I’m preparing an intimate gathering, brunch, wedding, or large celebration, I want people to recognize the thought and attention that went into it.
What sets Meritorious apart is that I don’t believe catering should just be about putting food on a table. Presentation matters. Flavor matters. Service matters. The entire experience matters. I pay attention to the details because I want my clients to feel that their event was created specifically for them rather than receiving a one-size-fits-all experience.
I’m most proud that I’ve been able to build something that reflects my own creativity and vision. I’m constantly thinking of new dishes, new presentations, and new ways to elevate what I offer. I never wanted Meritorious to blend in—I wanted to create a brand people could see, taste, and experience and immediately know there was something different about it. That is the standard I continue to build on.
What does success mean to you?
I don’t define success by the amount of money I can or could make. For me, success is about building something of my own and showing my children, my grandchildren, and people who look like me that it is possible to create your own path, believe in your abilities, and work for yourself.
Success is also every person who has trusted me enough to allow Meritorious to be part of an important moment in their life. When someone chooses me to cater their wedding, birthday, baby shower, family gathering, or another special occasion, they are giving me an opportunity to contribute to a memory they may carry with them for years. I never take that trust for granted.
I also believe success is measured by impact. If my journey encourages someone else to take a chance on their own idea, pursue something they are passionate about, or realize that their circumstances don’t have to determine where they can go, then what I’m building has a purpose beyond me.
Of course, I want Meritorious to continue growing and becoming successful as a business, but the legacy behind it means even more to me. I want my children and grandchildren to see that I took something I loved, believed in myself enough to pursue it, and created something with my own name and vision behind it. If that inspires them—or someone else—to believe they can do the same, that is success to me.
