Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Wilkes.
Hi Theresa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Theresa Wilkes, the owner of Light Hand Clinical Massage in Taylors, SC since 2010. I’ve been a clinical massage therapist for 34 years, specializing in the treatment of chronic pain and illness. I was the director of 2 massage schools before I came to Greenville. I have found a great deal of joy and satisfaction serving people in the Upstate, many of whom have never experienced true therapeutic massage. I have a small staff, and we offer neuromuscular therapy, craniosacral therapy and lymph drainage massage. We don’t do relaxation massage. Rather we focus on treating people with injuries, long term pain and chronic conditions like fibromyalgia, long Covid, Parkinsons, cancer, migraines, vertigo, sciatica and the like. Very soon, I am going to hand the practice over to my associate, Heidi Zambrano. I’ll be teaching continuing education classes to professional massage therapists. But Heidi is highly qualified, and we are very excited about the transition. As a matter of fact, she has a similar background to me. Her professional training includes acupressure, Thai, neuromuscular, myofascial, scar tissue management, reflexology and oncology. And, she has been the director of 2 massage schools. Under her leadership, Light Hand Clinical Massage will continue to serve people who are seeking pain relief and wholistic wellness in the upstate.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Educating the public about the true scope of practice of clinical massage. Half of your body is soft tissue and muscle. It can hold onto long term inflammation and pain, but it is often overlooked by medical treatment. I have seen people find complete wellness and relief after decades of chronic pain. But many people only know about relaxation or spa massage.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Light Hand Clinical Massage?
I think I’ve covered this. However, I will say, I am proud that our business model is to get people into treatment, get them well enough to end treatment or enter a maintenance schedule. Then, hopefully, they tell others about us. We don’t think that being a patient for life is wellness.
