Today we’d like to introduce you to Tessa Webb
Hi Tessa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been more of a creative so I feel like there are so many things that contributed to me becoming a photographer. I guess one of the most influential things was when my aunt let me use her DSLR, I was in love from the first click of the shutter. It was many years after that before I was able to afford my own camera but as soon as I got it, I started taking photos for family & friends, mostly just for fun and as a hobby. But then people started offering to pay me and I was just like “holy cow, I can make money doing something I love”. So I started doing a few sessions here and there and eventually a few weddings. Then another big moment happened in my life when me and my husband eloped in Alaska. We had such a hard time finding an adventurous photographer who would be willing to document our story so when we got back I decided I was going to be that photographer for other couples like me & my husband!! I had been searching for my place in the world for such a long time… “what was my passion?”, “what did God put me on this earth to do?”… And I truly feel like God was telling me that I was meant to show people how beautiful & unique they are!!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not… It took me awhile to even realize this was the path I was meant to take because I had my son when I was extremely young so I felt this emergency need to get a “normal” and stable job so that is what I did… And then when I finally realized that I absolutely did NOT have to live my life like that I fought a lot of self doubt and “what would people think” thoughts. I felt like everyone would think I was dumb or not good at being a photographer. Which I realized is totally crazy because no one can judge your art, art is art and there are no rules for what you can create. Honestly, I still feel like it is a daily struggle to make sure I am doing everything I can to make my dreams come true!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a photographer who specializes in couples & elopements and I am known for doing lots of outdoorsy & adventurous sessions! I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my ability to make couples feel so natural and comfortable in front of the camera and my ability to bring out the beauty in themselves that they never thought was possible. It is my goal with every photo for someone to look at that and see themselves the way that God sees them, beautiful & unique! Something I am most proud of is my ability to myself and my work out there for others to judge even though I fight so many feelings of being an introvert and not being good enough.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
As far as networking goes, something that has really worked for me is just talking to people. I really look for opportunities to connect with other photographers and vendors as much as possible. One of the main ways I do that is by hosting & joining styled shoots all over the place. I have truly grown so much from talking to others in my industry.
