Today we’d like to introduce you to Taren S
Taren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my journey as a Southern Conjuring Witch over 40 years ago, deeply rooted in the traditions and folklore of the American South. From a young age, I was drawn to the magickal and spiritual practices that surrounded me. My passion for this path led me to immerse myself in the study and practice of various magickal traditions, which eventually culminated in the founding of the House of Witchcraft. This tradition honors, respects, and celebrates all paths of magick and expressions of Divinity, creating a community that embraces diversity in spiritual practices.
My journey has also involved sharing my knowledge through writing. My first book, “Hoodoo in the Psalms,” became a bestseller, connecting with readers who were eager to learn about the powerful intersection of the Psalms and Hoodoo. This success inspired me to write “Conjuring Dirt: Magick of Footprints, Crossroads, and Graveyards,” where I delve into the magickal significance of these elements and offer practical insights for practitioners.
After spending seven enriching years in California, which I humorously refer to as a foreign country, I returned to my roots in the South. Now, I reside on a small farm near John’s Island, outside Charleston, SC, where I continue to practice and teach my unique blend of magick. This serene environment provides the perfect backdrop for my work, allowing me to connect deeply with nature and spirituality.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not always been smooth. One of the significant challenges I faced was balancing my magickal practice with the need to establish a supportive and inclusive community. Building the House of Witchcraft required dedication and effort to create a space where practitioners from various backgrounds could feel welcomed and respected.
Another challenge was navigating the journey of writing and publishing my books. Sharing deeply personal and intricate magickal knowledge with a broader audience came with the risk of misunderstanding and misinterpretation. However, these experiences also brought growth, teaching me the importance of clear communication and the power of authentic storytelling.
Living in California for seven years posed its own set of challenges as I adjusted to a new environment and different spiritual landscapes. However, this period also enriched my practice, bringing new perspectives and a deeper appreciation for the diverse magickal traditions I encountered.
Despite these obstacles, my commitment to my path and my community has never wavered. Each challenge has been an opportunity for growth, shaping me into the practitioner and teacher I am today. My experiences have deepened my understanding of magick and strengthened my resolve to continue sharing my knowledge and fostering an inclusive magickal community.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor and building a strong network are crucial steps in any journey, especially in the magickal community. Here’s some advice based on my experiences:
1. Be Open and Authentic: Authenticity is key when seeking a mentor or building connections. Share your genuine interests, goals, and experiences. This helps in attracting like-minded individuals who resonate with your path.
2. Join Communities: Participate in online forums, social media groups, and local gatherings focused on your interests. The magickal community is vibrant and diverse, and being part of these spaces can help you connect with potential mentors and peers.
3. Attend Workshops and Seminars: Engage in workshops, seminars, and rituals. These events provide opportunities to learn from experienced practitioners and to network with others who share your interests. They can also be a place to identify potential mentors who resonate with your values and practices.
4. Reach Out: Don’t be afraid to approach someone you admire. Whether through an email, a social media message, or in person, expressing your admiration and asking for guidance can open doors. Be respectful of their time and express clearly why you are seeking their mentorship.
5. Offer Your Skills: Mentorship is a two-way street. Be willing to offer your skills, assistance, or insights in return. This shows that you value the mentor’s time and are committed to a mutually beneficial relationship.
6. Cultivate Patience and Persistence: Finding the right mentor or building a solid network takes time. Be patient and persistent. Keep showing up, engaging with the community, and demonstrating your commitment to your path.
What Has Worked Well for Me
1. Building the House of Witchcraft: Creating a community that celebrates diversity in spiritual practices has been instrumental. It not only connected me with many wonderful practitioners but also allowed me to learn from them and grow as a mentor myself.
2. Writing and Sharing Knowledge: Writing my books, “Hoodoo in the Psalms” and “Conjuring Dirt,” has been a significant networking tool. It allowed me to reach a wider audience and connect with readers who resonated with my work, many of whom became valuable connections and mentees.
3. Engaging in Diverse Spiritual Landscapes: Living in different places, like my time in California, broadened my perspective and introduced me to new magickal traditions and communities. This enriched my practice and expanded my network.
4. Being Active in the Community: Conducting workshops, seminars, and rituals has kept me connected with the community. These activities provide continuous opportunities to meet new people and stay engaged with the evolving landscape of magickal practices.
By staying true to your path, actively engaging with the community, and being open to learning and sharing, you can find mentors and build a strong, supportive network that will enrich your journey.
