Today we’d like to introduce you to Santonia Sherman
Hi Santonia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey with makeup started 10 years ago in my college dorm room, standing in front of my bathroom mirror, determined to put my skills to the test. What I thought was just a simple full-face application quickly turned into something more when friends and peers started asking me to do their makeup for events like probates and parties. Their persistence and encouragement helped me see that this was more than just a hobby—it was the start of my career.
At the time, stepping into this industry was both exciting and terrifying, but I’m so grateful I pushed past the fear. Today, I primarily work in Greenville, South Carolina, but my journey has taken me far beyond that. I’ve worked in Charleston, where I attended the Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology in Goose Creek to study aesthetics. Charleston was a turning point in my career, thanks to the incredible community of women in the industry who continuously motivated and inspired me. Many of them became mentors and lifelong friends.
I’ve also had the opportunity to work in Atlanta, Georgia, further refining my craft and expanding my experience. Through it all, I’ve realized that if you can do something for hours without getting tired of it, it’s not just a gift—it’s your passion. I feel so fortunate to have found my own lane in the beauty industry, and I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years will bring.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like any journey worth taking, there were challenges along the way. In the beginning, self-doubt was one of my biggest obstacles. I wasn’t always confident in my skills, and stepping into a field as competitive as the beauty industry was intimidating. I questioned whether I was good enough, but the support from friends and peers pushed me to keep going.
Another challenge was navigating the business side of the industry. Being a makeup artist isn’t just about perfecting your craft—it’s also about marketing yourself, building a clientele, and learning how to sustain a business. There were moments when I felt stuck, unsure of how to take my career to the next level.
Moving to different cities like Charleston and Atlanta also came with its own set of struggles. Each new place meant rebuilding my network and proving myself all over again. But through these experiences, I gained resilience, learned how to adapt, and built connections that have been invaluable to my growth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional makeup artist specializing in full glam makeup. I’m known for my bold color combinations and detailed use of glitter and jewels. I love transforming faces into works of art, making each client feel confident and radiant.
After attending cosmetology school, I made it a priority to work with a diverse range of skin tones and complexions, which has allowed me to expand my artistry and cater to a wider clientele. Representation and inclusivity in beauty are important to me, and I take pride in ensuring that everyone who sits in my chair feels seen and celebrated.
Beyond my work as a makeup artist, I’m also a mother and a business owner. Balancing both roles hasn’t always been easy, but I’m incredibly proud of how I’ve been able to pursue my passion while making time for my son. Despite the fast-paced and demanding nature of the industry, my family remains my top priority.
Above all, I believe my faith is what truly sets me apart. My work is not just about makeup—it’s about uplifting people, making them feel beautiful inside and out. I often joke that many of my clients keep coming back not just for the glam, but for my personality and loving nature. Creating a warm, positive experience for everyone I work with is just as important to me as the final look.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is leaving a legacy for my family and creating generational wealth. Growing up, I wasn’t taught about credit, financial literacy, or how to start a business, so I’ve made it my mission to lay the groundwork for my son and future generations. I want them to have the knowledge and opportunities that I had to learn on my own, so they’ll already be multiple steps ahead.
For me, success isn’t just about my career—it’s about building something that lasts. I want to create a foundation that allows my family to thrive, whether that’s through financial stability, entrepreneurship, or simply instilling the confidence to chase their dreams without fear. Every step I take in my career is not just for me, but for them. That’s what keeps me going, even when the journey gets tough.
