Meet Sam Simon of St. Louis/ Missouri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Simon

Sam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started photography in my sophomore year of high school, with my dad teaching me how to use the camera and adjust the settings while we took pictures of the moon on the roof of our house. My grandfather, an illustrator, told stories through his artwork, and I’ve used photography as a way to connect with the past and tell others’ stories as well. Over time, I leveraged both photography and social media to share these stories and build a following. I had the opportunity to work with various apps and brands on social media, and after one of my photo posts, Mizzou Athletics reached out to collaborate.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not completely, while the creative side has always been strong, having to deal with personality issues and creative differences with other people has been a challenge, early on when I was just beginning, I would ask advice from people who tried to use that against me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I primarily focus on sports photography, but I also cover concerts, portraits, and a variety of formal and informal events. I’ve had the privilege of being on the floor for several major events, including the NCAA softball regionals, Mizzou football homecoming, and Mizzou men’s basketball’s victory over Kansas. My photos have also been used in various designs that I’ve created, and players often ask me to send them my pictures so they can post them on their own social media.

What matters most to you?
What matters to me most is maintaining my health and freedom, as they provide the foundation for everything else. One of the ongoing challenges I face is gaining access to shoot the events I want, but it’s always worth it when I’m able to capture the perfect shot. Being there when it’s necessary, in the right moment, is crucial to me—it’s what makes the work meaningful and impactful.
