Meet Rhodes Farrell of Spartanburg,SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhodes Farrell.

Hi Rhodes, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In high school, I was able to take an audio recording class and wanted to be an audio engineer. But as I went to college, I realized I had worked with cameras a lot as well. In my final semester of college, being too late, I figured out I should have gone for Film Production. So, I taught myself on YouTube and included videos in whatever job I had after that for the next several years. When I moved to Spartanburg in 2018, I went full time into video production. Since then I have shot and produced 100s of videos for small businesses and national companies as well as sticking my foot into the narrative filmmaking world.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
If I had gone to school for this, I might have jumped in sooner, but the business classes I took instead have been quite useful. However, I have come into the position of Director for the Reedy Reels Film Festival and the founder or a filmmaker’s networking group, Film Bar Greenville, as well as hosting a podcast and YouTube channel, Indie Film Hub. Much of which is passion driven (no pay), and constantly has me evaluating paths and priorities while also presenting unique opportunities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I run 4 organizations and help with others.

My primary business is video production for business as Scenic Rhodes Productions. I specialize in relational marketing and brand documentary videos. I can handle most positions on set but I really like producing and camera operating. Though, I have a background in audio production.

I also run Film Bar Greenville, a networking hun for those in the filmmaking industry in the Upstate. We have meetups, classes, and film challenges throughout the year which provides opportunities to connect, learn and gain hands on experience. We want to raise the talent floor for the Upstate to be camera ready and bring in larger productions.

I more recently took over the Reedy Reels Film Festival as the new Director and it provides yet another way to support filmmaking in the Southeast.

Time permitting, I like to create helpful YouTube videos and podcasts covering all kinds of filmmaking topics and sharing conversations with other professionals. You can find those under the Indie Film Hub name on YouTube and Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Lastly, I also help with ArtsUp SC. An organization that brings together creative artists of all genres and disciplines to create innovative programming that celebrates and amplifies the voices of those artists while enriching the cultural diversity of South Carolina’s Upstate.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I had a great childhood, so I’m not sure I can confidently give a favorite memory.
